A woman named Gwen Jorgensen set an ambitious goal for herself. Whether she achieves it or fails to do so will not affect your life in anyway. I am intrigued by her pursuit but ambivalent about the results. Meanwhile, everything she says or does inevitably results in hundreds of replies on this message board.
So what's the real reason some of you yahoos are so irked by her pursuit of her goals that do not affect your life in any way what so ever?
Let's get to the bottom of why so many of you seem to dislike Gwen Jorgensen

Cause they are peanut butter and jealous.
-
Because she is literally a women and brakes there ego that they were a former D1 runner in a big school which ran slower then she does now.
-
because she's an ambitious outspoken woman. doesn't go well with the attitude of the basement dwelling men's rights M!AGA crowd that unfortunately constitutes a significant fraction of this board's total population.
-
I don't like her because she is boastful and is nowhere near able to back it up.
-
I mean, she can go for it, but the fact is she wants an Olympic gold when she very well might not make it of of the trials. Then she says "Oh, I'm mad I'm not in 2:19 shape.
It's not ambitious, it's... It's like if Jim Wamsley said he was going to win gold.
Yeah he's fast, and tore up another running related sport. Yeah, maybe he runs fast and makes the team
But Wamsley isn't out here complaing that he's not in 2:04 shape and saying he wants gold.
If he did we'd make fun of him too.
So no, it's not just Gwen and it's not because she's a woman. -
I for one really like Gwen and hope she becomes a household name so to speak and I hope she becomes a sub 2:20 gal. And since she won gold in the triathlon, it makes since to go for gold in her next athletic endeavor imo. However I highly doubt she'll win in 2020 (maybe 2024?) the marathon and triathlon are two completely different sports.

+1
All I can add is that they want their mommies to trim the crust. -
Because triathletes are annoying and dumb.

I like her. She’s got guts and she has big goals. Nothing wrong with that.

She is NOT "outspoken" (which in reality typically means obnoxious attention-seeking). She actually seems pretty conservative and traditional. She posts on social media, but that's probably part of her endorsement deal I'll bet.
She set a big goal, yes, but hello? She's got an Olympic gold medal. And was probably the most dominant female triathlete in history. Tri is not the same as pure running, but I think she's obviously earned some credentials and credibility. This is not some random person off the streets. -

I don't think you know what those words mean, because your statement isn't true. -

I think, honestly, this is why so many people dislike her.
We all have triathlete friends who we don't want to see validated by Gwen. As soon as she podiums at a WMM, we'll never hear the end of it from our 3-sport pals: "I could run a 2:50 if I didn't have to swim and bike beforehand" or "Jan/Sebastian/etc. could beat Rupp in their sleep if they only ran instead of did triathlon." It's annoying (even as a triathlete I find these conversations annoying and misguided).
The idea that someone who didn't take the track/XC at a D1 powerhouse > USA Track > Marathoning route unsettles people. And it doesn't come with the usual data to make predictions, which is also unsettling to people.
Either way, I think you hit the nail on the head with this comment, whether you meant to or not. -
The distance running world has always been very much about doing your talking with your feet. Also, there has been friction between the distance running world and the triathlon wold. IM folks think they are the superior endurance athletes. Distance runners like to bust on IM athletes, alleging short running courses because of lazy measurement standards. And there is also a bit of a blue collar v. white collar with IM folks spending a lot on equipment, coaching and race fees versus distance runners who might not spend as much on an entire season of racing training as it costs to enter an IM race.
Then, Gwen comes along and announces that she wants to win a gold medal in the Olympic marathon. This immediately comes off as disrespectful to distance runners who have been training their brains out since high school to get to the Olympics because Gwen makes it sound like her triathlon bona fides put her in a better position to be great at the marathon than what hundreds of athletes have been doing 24/7 for years and years. It would be like Galen Rupp quitting running and announcing that he wants to win Kona IM champs in three years. Everyone in IM would say "who the f$5k are you?"
I think Gwen is a bit misunderstood. I think she really meant to say that there were no limits on her goals in the marathon and that she was going to put her heart and soul into it to see if she could compete against the best. But it may have been better for marketing for her to come out and be public about a goal to be the first tri athlete to win a gold in both the tri and marathon. There is wider range of product endorsement dollars in the tri than the marathon. So, keeping a prominent public profile helps her hang on to more endorsement income. -

Because we're mad that we are not in sub 2 hour marathon shape .... -

I know exactly what they mean. She was audacious to say her goal is win the gold medal in the Olympic marathon. She has literally no chance of ever doing that. -

Boastful is not a descriptor of having ambitious (or in your mind, unrealistic) goals.
