Recently, the idea of racing has been less and less appealing to me. I haven't been injured, and training has been going well for the last 4-5 years (I set my 5K road PR last fall at age 35). However, there are a few reasons why I just haven't had the desire to race:
- the nearest location where decent races are held is an hour and a half away
- races are getting more and more expensive and fewer are giving free entries or discounts to faster guys
- none of my contemporaries that I have raced against since moving to this area after college race any longer, and although I'm friendly with the younger talent, it's just not the same as racing the old group of guys
What's interesting to me is that despite not really feeling like racing, the fire to train hard is stronger than ever. I look forward to track intervals, tempo runs, and hill repeats every week. I meet a guy in my small town every Sunday for a long run on the river path. I rarely run less than 75 miles a week.
Is anyone else in the same situation? Is it time to just keep training hard and running a time trial here or there? Am I just becoming an old, out of touch b@stard?
