it was posted on the front page but no one has seemed to comment on this. seems to be a pretty big statement that vig has made. hope it doesnt create too much pressure for the guy.
so a true frosh wins ncaa. i'd say it's not a particularly "big statement" to say he has pretty high level talent, especially considering it's his coach saying it. way to start a thread, though, where the guy will get trashed. i don't think it's too bold a statement to say you're troll talent is jordan-esque.
Leo is slower than Tom Byers was as a freshman and 2 years older. Let's keep it real, folks.
maybe. give the kid a few weeks and let's see if he can't run two seconds faster. further, everyone would have said that michael jordan wasn't as good as lebron james as a sophomore in high school. talent doesn't necessarily equate with development.
Manzano is so raw. His longest run in high school was 6 miles. His weekly mileage was never over 30.
Comparing anyone to Jordan in any way is hyperbole.
Jordan is the best in the history of the WORLD in basketball, so he's saying here that this freshman kid has the talent to be the best in the world. Only time will tell, but it is for sure a very bold statement, and it surely ISN'T trashing this kid to mention that his coach is getting just a TAD too excited here.

Don't take the coaches words out of context. The first line explains that Manzano has a gift that the coach cannot take credit for, such was the case with Jordan and Gretzky. He was not saying he is the Jordan of running, just that he has intangibles that a coach cannot take credit for, just like the other two athletes.

well, he does say "Leo has that type of talent" - with "that type" seeming to refer to Jordan or Gretzky.

If the intangibles are innate "talent" Jordan didn't show any. He didn't stand out at all in either basketball or track. Competed in the triple jump completely unnoticed.
What Jordan did after getting cut from his high school basketball team is play 8 hours a day, every day. Is work ethic the intangible that Manzano's coach speaks of?

You need to get your facts straight about Jordan's high school career. It is a common misconception that Jordan got "cut" from his high school team. He did not get cut. Jordan did not make his high school varsity team as a freshman. He started on the frosh/soph squad, but got "cut" from varsity.
And MJ oozed talent out of his pores. He was the greatest basketball player of all time because he had it all: talent, work ethic, luck, charisma, determination, courage, heart, trash talk, the media, the whole nine yards.
i believe he was actually cut as a sophomore, not frosh.
Manzano will be 21 years old in September. Check out the website. Not really the age of a "true" fish to be honest...

1) Yes it matters. People were all the more impressed that he won with that time as a "freshman". But, the fact that he's 20 years old make the time a little less impressive than if he were 17 or 18.
2) To ever ask someone how fast they are as you just did in an effort to slience them is ridiculous. Too many of you people here do it. Runners who are faster than we are can still be critiqued. Can you not be upset with the President of the United States for things he does? Have YOU ever been the President of the United States?
