Kipchoge vs Mayer records. Which is the greater?

If it was a black that got the decathlon WR, it would be greater than the marathon. However, a white guy got it so it is way below the marathon.

Kipchoge. WMMs are a step above DL meets, which are a step above CE Challenge meets.

As an Olympic or Worlds champion and WR holder, many more would know Mayer over Kipchoge just because the decathlete has more cachet. Only a 100m sprinter currently has more cachet than a decathlete.

At some point yesterday, Kipchoge was trending number one worldwide on Twitter. Mayer never trended outside of France. Also the only media that covered Mayer's record more than Kipchoge's is French. Mayer picked the wrong weekend to break the record because he's been completely overshadowed.

My dad just watched the sports news in central Europe. They showed Mayer getting the WR in the decathlon. No sign of Berlin marathon results.

I think kipchoge's accomplishment is slightly above Mayer's, just because of how much he took off of the record, but let's remember that Kimetto is much less of a legend than Eaton, so Mayer actually broke a more significant record.

Why would you even bring up the OGs and WCs? We’re talking about two records, neither of which was set in a championship. Your post is irrelevant.

That's unfair to Mayer. Instagram is crowded with way more hobby joggers who discuss reaching the pinnacle of running a 4 hour marathon rather than anything else. They don't know what it means to jump, throw, or sprint.

Mayer looks doped? What? Surely, it's just the opposite, as he has got to be the smallest - weight wise - world record holder in recent history. 170 pds? That's miles lighter than Daley Thompson who used to be dwarfed by his main competition.

I believe that's an old number, from the age of around 20, when he was still developing. A French site listed him as 181 lbs currently.

In any case, Mayer is so far less likely doped than Kipchoge it's not even funny.

This decathlon news is why winning an Olympic gold medal is better than getting a world record.

The general public isn’t as dialed into the decathlon as they are other events (there are, of course, exceptions). So, Ashton Eaton, someone who will likely not be very well remembered by general sports fans, was at least witnessed on the Olympic stage being a complete stud, rather than this dude who no one knows on a weekend in September. Especially with an ordinary name like Kevin Mayer….

Olympic gold medals are forever (unless you get busted for doping)

I know many of you will disagree, but as a runner I'd rather have an olympic gold medal than a world record.

Basically running is a more popular sport than decathlon. That doesn't make certain achievement in one sport greater than another.

Kipchoge's record is better. A marathon WR is just flatout better than a decathlon world record. The marathon is a sport where tens of thousands of runners participate in a marathon major and the winner gets possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars. How often do you see decathlons pulling in thousands of participants and giving out that kind of appearance and prize money? Its popularity can't come close to that of the marathon regardless of giving a claim to being the most overall fit athlete alive. With the marathon it's clear that hordes of people are doing it and this guy stood out above giants who preceded him. With the decathlon it's a niche sport people don't bother with and recently a couple of guys have stood out in it. Much like the women's steeplechase you're only now starting to see serious performances emerge in it.
