I know that most Garmin watch fitness estimates are a rough ballpark estimate at best, but how close has your Garmin come to predicting your actual race fitness?

Not accurate at all..
A friend showed me his the other day and it predicted that he was capable of a 2:38 thon - he's probably a 3:05 guy at best.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 235 and my watch's estimates for me are completely out of whack, too. My PB are:
5K: 17:34
10K: 36:10
Half Marathon: (about to do one, should break 1:20, somewhere in the 1:19:00's)
But my watch thinks I can run
5K: 15:41
10K: 32:34
Half Marathon: 1:11:53
Good luck with the half marathon, I wouldn't guess you'd be breaking 1:20 with those PBs but it's possible. Let us know! Would be nice if the watch was correct for those other times.

Mine is waaaay out. Straight after killing myself running my HM PB of 71mins, it updated immediately to tell me I could actually run it in 68 minutes - not sure what that was based on.
It's based on your MaxHR, if that info is incorrect, everything else will be.
It is pretty far off. It should be smart enough to account for the times you have run previously. I ran a 10k in low 33 and the next day the watch says I should be able to do 31....If I could have run 31, I would have run it! I think the reason for it being inaccurate is that the heart rate monitor can be whacky at times. Sometimes the heart rate monitor will show an incorrect/absurdly low heart rate for the first half of a run and then it will be accurate the second half. Overall the average heart rate will be lower than actual due to the beginning being off so it will think I ran that average pace on a lower heart rate than I actually did....From there it incorrectly calculates my fitness.
