Yes - This list shows people who have done it and gone under as well:

It looks like you have to be 50 and older to do this, with the window open all the way to the 85-90 age group. At and after 90 it seems to have not been done. Age 70-80 seems to be the 'sweet spot' for putting as many as 10 seconds on your age.
Quite a few have.

Interesting question, but relatively easy to check by looking at masters records by age:

I'll get back to you in about 40 years and let you know.
I did it when I was 36.
If Secretariat couldn't do it, it is certainly impossible.
It's only one lap around the track......... wrote:

good job: you're quick.
I ran a 25. ran the first 200 conservatively in about 16 seconds then I kicked HARD and closed in 9 the last half of the race.

A 70 year old American dude ran under 60 seconds just the other week.
'Ex-Runner' was boasting that he could still run faster (at 30).
I'm 43 and I would do it, there's just a slight problem; The world record is 43:03.

If I actually started training I probably could, given that I'm 65. Sounds like it should be easy, unless you're actually 65.
300 or even 200 would be better
A 70 year old ran sub 60 just a month or so ago.
ok, thanks everyone, my bad should have looked more closely.
Based on that link, it appears it's been done for ages 51-87 or so. Amazing.
If I were patient enough, I could do it easily.
Oh, wait. Are you counting by minutes or seconds?
I did when I was 15!
60 seconds at 60 seems 1000x easier than 50 at 50.
i think coe could probably break 55 seconds if he went after it.
A poster named Lonewolf on the track and field news discussion board has been doing it for many years; I think last year he did about 82-83 and only needed something like an 86. He most often runs them on his birthday. He was a very good 440 runner back about 1950 and a very good all around athlete. He is also a long-time high=level track and field official who has done at least one WC/OG (Atlanta, I am pretty sure) and about 50 Texas Relays. He has probably been doing this since his early-mid 50s.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
