Some coaches are actually selfish and like all the attention, as in stealing attention from athletes and spotlighting themselves. They are on a power trip too and get a kick out of affecting people/athletes even if it's negative. The type of coaches that brag about what great workouts and training they devised as if it was the reason for an individual or a teams success. These coaches will controversially suspend-- top athletes OR multiple lower level athletes at once to try and bring attention to THEMSELVES. I remember I had an ego maniac coach in high school who made a big deal about potentially kicking our top guy off the team because a rival school complained he should have been DQed for allegedly shoving (exaggerated/biased) one of their runners. Now what kind of coach doesn't stick up for his own guy in that situation and threatens to cut him? I'll tell ya who, the ego maniac coach who wants attention to show everyone he has control and power and owns the team.

He said medal count. Nobody even mentioned depth. Why would you bring up irrelevant information?
If you were running for me you would be done for the season and possibly would have kicked out of school so my suspension wouldn't even matter.

You have to be a little realistic and understand kids are going to do stupid stuff now and then and completely ruining there dreams is harsh and could lead to a downward spiral. Three meets I think is reasonable, it shows that that type of behavior is not acceptable and underage drinking should not be taken lightly, but also gives the kid a chance to redeem himself.
I love all of these posts criticizing the coach. Ego maniac because there are team rules? Underage kid drinking alcohol = suspension at every high school. Even college programs will not want you drinking during seasons when you are 21.

Lets do medals then.
London EU 5 US 2
Rio EU 4 US 5 (us probably doping up for the olympics)
Beijing EU 4 US 0 (lol)
Total EU 13 US 7
The lesson is don't get caught. This is a very small penalty and you should take it like a man. You're coach probably knows it's a small penalty, too.

Probably. But it sucks that op is missing 3 races, especially when he's in hs and prob cracking at the bit to get racing again after summer. Getting suspeneded from races should only happen if you become academically ineligible, skip practice, or drag someone else on the team down. I could see a 1 race suspension for this max.

Who was the 4th EU medalist in Rio, I only remember Farah x2 and MMB...
Also “us probably doping up for the Olympics” is pretty rich considering 6 of the 12 EU medals were Mo “doorbell” Farah
The suspension, while technically for underage drinking, is actually for getting caught underage drinking. Schools/coaches/admins know a substantial percentage of kids party in HS, and in the vast majority of cases if you don’t flaunt it then you won’t get caught and thus won’t be punished.
But if you’re stupid or unlucky enough to get caught, of course the penalty seems unfairly harsh. The only way schools/coaches/admins have to show that they take underage drinking seriously is to punish the 5% of students who get caught harshly enough to make the other 95% think twice about doing it (and, when they do it, be smart enough not to post pictures of it).
So, yeah, this penalty is harsh by design. You’re paying a stupid tax; next time you party (after the season, hopefully), tell your friends they can cover your case of Keystone Light for carrying the weight for them. And make sure no one posts pictures.

First post on here today that actually made me laugh out loud lmfao
It sucks but it sounds like he made the right call.
The coach should have kicked you off team for good. Sounds like you're well on your way to living a life addicted to the bottle or the needle for some instantaneous release from suffering all the while blaming society for being a helpless victim.
God intervened through your coach
to give you a second chance in life. It's up to you now to take this rare opportunity to
live and run a good life. First star, is to get down on your hands and knees and repent and ask Christ Jesus for forgiveness and accept him as your Lord. If you follow him then you'll be assured of eternal salvation.
Run the race that he had set out for you, not your own selfish and prideful path that leads to destruction.

+1
This is probably a troll thread anyway, but something similar happened to me in college, and it's sad to see the losers on this board backing such a ridiculous decision just because this kid comes off as whiny.
Depending on the state, your coach may have no choice. In Massachusetts, the suspension is 25% of competitions. So if there as 12-15 contests (quite possibly with dual-meets, league, class/districts, etc), 3 meets would be considered correct punishment and possibly out of the coaches hand
Also may consider the coach may have been informed by someone of the activities, and he might have his hands tied and forced to respond.,,,,

Haha the US is such a shitshow when it comes to partying. In my country we party with our coaches.
Yes, but you forget that the USA was founded by a bunch of Puritans. Many of their religious beliefs were incorporated into the US government at the time and some still exist to this day. This is why the USA has so many weird laws that in Europe no one would think of doing. The school system in the USA loves to direct and control the lives of the students both in and out of the classroom.
