Did Jakob Ingebrigtsen think he had another lap to go right before the finish?

Not a native Norwegian but I have studied the language. It seems to me like he pulled up thinking he had the win and joked with the reporters that even though he has run the 1500 many times and knows when the finish is, he was very surprised that nobody had come up on him sooner. So more like a second guessing, but not actually pulling up because he was expecting to do another lap. Hope that helps.

I have also seen quotes tonight where he says he had an extra kick he never got to use since no one caught up with him.

In a new article at Dagbladet.no, Jakob states again that he saw the number 1 on the lapcounter, but still he was kicking, then he says:

" I felt extremely comfortable at the warmup today. During the race I felt I had an extra gearshift if anyone should approach me, alas noone did, so I didn't get to test that extra gearshift. I will better take that shift tomorrow, pointing to the 5000 meters"

In norwegian:

"- Jeg var ekstremt god på oppvarmingen i dag. Jeg kjente underveis at jeg hadde et ekstra gir, hvis det kom noen opp. Dessverre kom det ingen på siden, slik at jeg ikke fikk testet ut det ekstra giret. Jeg får heller ta det i morgen, varsler 17-åringen og sikter til 5000-meteren."

From the video it definitely seems like he wasn't going all out the last 50, just sort of striding but not kicking per se, so I'm willing to believe he got confused and backed off slightly.

Maybe he couldn’t wrap his mind around actually winning the race? How many others have run for lesser places when they were capable of winning?

That last 140 was hard to discribe. The race seemed to build up behind JI like a wave but it never reached critical height. Instead of crashing down around him it sort of evened out and floated in to the line. Much like the Rio OG Final you kept waiting for the mad dash to the line to happen not realizing it was already playing out in front of you.

I assumed his odd reaction after was that no times were immediately shown. He only won by 0.04 and everyone was clearly awaiting the scoreboard guy to awaken from his nap.

Very strange.

One of the best sources is the interviews from NRK, the Norwegian broadcaster.

Of course, Jakob knows the distance, but in the interview, he said that the lap counter said 1 lap left.

What he is actually saying is that he did not go all out at all the last 200m. He was mostly floating.

I think you can say that he did not expect all the old runner let him control the race as a 17y old.

It was almost too easy for him.

His dad said that he is not tired and that he can win tomorrow.

With Jakob running like this, you should just learn Norwegian ;-)
