Just as they shook off plastic Turk Yasmin Can, the W10k gets won by the wife of a Kenyan who works in the embassy in Israel (which is no more in Europe than Kenya is). Apparently this is 'historic'. Perhaps historic in its stupidity? What is the point of the Euro champs these days.

Get your facts straight. She was a nanny for a Kenyan family in Israel (ambassador or chargé d'affaires, can't remember) when she met her Israeli husband, who's also her coach. I wouldn't call her plastic, but she still spends a lot of time in Kenya. Yasmin Can, on the other hand, has never lived in Turkey and refused to move there. I think going with Salpeter's near suicidal surge is what did her in.

OK I misheard the details a bit, I thought they said her husband worked in the embassy. I'm not suggesting she's in Yasmin Can territory but still, Israel isn't in Europe and only a teeny bit of Turkey is in it.
Also it should be pointed out that Israel has fielded African distance runners before, can't remember whether they were Ethiopian or Eritrean but I'm sure someone will correct the details.
Yes, Israel has had Ethiopian Jews compete for Israel.
Israel competes in European championships in all sports because many of the Muslim countries won't recognize Israel and refuse to let them compete in their countries or refuse to compete against them in 1v1 sports.
Those are actually Ethiopian Jews (look up 'falashas') who like all Jewish people around the world, have a right to Israeli citizenship. They are heavily discriminated against in modern Israel but they still as Jewish as Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jews.

Israel is culturally European, Turkey on the other hand isn't.
If Israel had to compete against Muslim countries, their athletes would get slaughtered time after time, because we all know how peaceful the Islamic religion is.

Israel has been excluded from all Asian championships since the 70s. 15 members of the Asian Athletics Association don't recognize Israel. About 30 years ago, Primo Nebiolo recommended that Israel be admitted on a temporary basis to the European Athletic Association. They have been there ever since.
