I'd thought I'd examine eras based on sub-9:00 2 milers. I broke it down into 7 year periods-1970-1977, 1978-1984, 1985-1991, 1992-1998. The regression has been alarming.
1970-1977(71), 1978-1984(40), 1985-1991(22) and 1992-1998(2).
Now look at the four year period of 1999-2002 and you're already at 30. What went wrong for the last 20 years and for all you posters who were in high school in 1992 to 1998-What the hell were you guys doing?!
Seriously, though what mysterious occurrence has taken place to get this on track again? Any ideas?
And does this have any effect on future world class American distance running. If you look at the depth of 5 and 10k in 1980-1984 I would conclude that it does. And with the depth of 5 and 10k this year in the U.S. being as strong as its been probably since that period we should be in for a better period ahead.
