Besides, I feel like time on feet is a bigger factor for injury risk than actual mileage, so I figure it makes sense to base my training on time on feet.

That's exactly what I did for a while until I realized how much of a time suck it was to manually map runs. Having a GPS watch automates the process. My first one was my friend's old Nike watch he sold to me for $50. You don't necessarily have to get a new $250 one.

I am amazed at how many of you wear GPS watches and iPhones to go on runs.
I ran D1 and have run over 60 mpw for like 25 years. I am not a Luddite. I just don't see value in Strava and all of that garbage. I just like to go run with a digital watch.

Me and my friends surf all year and I am the first one who bought a smart watch for surfing. I’ve been searching something perfect for weeks and finally i url=
https://www.surfinghandbook.com/best-surf-watches/]foundthis great guys who told everything i need to know about watches for surfing and you know what all friends used the same source and now we all wearing same watch. Some of us used to say we are a surfing band. Not only good watches but guys from this source told me about really great spots for surfing so we use GPS in the watch to find it when we are in a canoe.
Do these guys provide discounts?
I thought I was the only one who wears a simple watch while training! I hate when people say that they like to keep track on how many calories were burnt or things like that. C'mon you train to stay healthy, not to keep track of stuff which you have no idea about!
I have an oldish garmin. I like to keep track of my aerobic development - I can repeat the same course at the same heart rate in the same weather at the same state of rest every few months and see my progress clearly in my pace.
I like strava to keep in touch with old running friends and to learn new trails.

For me the biggest benefit of GPS is getting an accurate time/mileage/pace for each run and it logging that.
Fyi: GPS is not 100% accurate.
A previous running log website went down several times, and there would've gone over a decade of logs. Strava recently closed off part of the log that I put up myself to me, like others not paying. No guarantee I can even get everything off the site as they lock up more and more. And then maybe one day they close up shop. A paper log is much, much faster. I have a notebook and take a few seconds to log. The only issue is if you're travelling and have to go online to measure everything. That can be time-consuming and there are bugs in gmap-pedometer that make it a pain sometimes. For instance, sometimes it won't give you an automatic measure of a road it thinks runners shouldn't be on, so you have to do straight line measures for every turn along the way and it can't do paths in thick forests.
Why do you people need to log all this stuff? I ditched the watch completely.
Do you want a cookie?
