Im an incoming D1 distance runner on partial scholarship. (If it matters, my school is a good non-power 5 school.) I dont have a great idea of how scholarship money works year to year.
I know my money is guaranteed for the upcoming year but what about subsequent years? Assuming good academics and behavior can it be reduced? If it can be, what kind of performances are needed to keep it? Or increase it? Thanks

Schools now have the option to offer 4 year grants. Coaches not supposed to reduce based on performance, but there are stories of that happening or even running off athletes.
http://www.ncaa.org/about/frequently-asked-questions-about-ncaa#scholaMost programs have evaluation meetings in the spring, They will tell you what you will get in aid for the next year. They will also tell you that they need your 'ship dollars for other incoming athletes, if that's the case.
Yeah, if you don’t have a four year agreement they can cut your scholarship. Even if you run well, they can still decide to cut/reduce because they want the money for incoming athletes. There is an appeal process, but really that’s kind of useless because you’re appealing to the same people who cut/reduced your scholarship in the first place. I’m an incoming D1 runner, like you, and I have friends from high school who run D1 in college so that’s how I know this stuff.
The athlete has the right to APPEAL any scholarship reduction;
This hearing is usually in front of University non-athletic officials and is impartial.
A good coach will have documentation to accompany justification of reduction.
A bad coach will get caught trying to reduce aid based on athletic performance and will get burned by the athlete's appeal.
Perhaps this is a question for the coach and compliance office at the school you signed with. (and should have been done BEFORE you signed if it actually mattered to you.)
They are the ONLY ONES that can give you an answer you can trust.
Or you can listen to the guesses you get here and hope the one you choose is correct.

This is naive. A lot of coaches/athletic departments will absolutely not be straight with you about this. I saw a bunch of athletes come through my school, lose their scholarships halfway through, and wonder what happened. The appeal process is of limited value. Even if you somehow do appeal successfully, you just guaranteed that the coach will hate you for the rest of your time at the school.

I get the impression that you haven’t been at/around a D1 program. I can tell you beyond any doubt that there are coaches and staffs who will try to intimidate and/or intentionally mislead students regarding scholarship reductions.
No. The NCAA does not take kindly to that type of behavior. If the athlete is in good academic standing and they show up to all of the practices, their scholarship will not be reduced.

And... I can tell you beyond any doubt that there are coaches and staffs who will be straight up with you and not try to intimidate and/or intentionally mislead students regarding scholarship reductions. And I have been at and around a D1 program.

I'd rather have a scholarship and a coach who hates me than lose my scholarship to an untrustworthy coach and no financial aid.
Blah Blah, coaches lie. Blah Blah kids lie too. That is not the point. the point is that the ncaa has rules, and athletic departments have policies IN WRITING. An informed consumer would know them BEFORE signing, but even so, if you want to know now, contact THE COMPLIANCE OFFICE at the school you already signed with. The will give you the official, unbiased answer to your question, and will do so in writing. Not the nonsense you are getting on here about "I had friends that got screwed over by a coach."
Different conferences have different policies. Different athletic departments have different policies. NOBODY ON HERE can give you the answer with 100% certainty, but the compliance office of the school you signed with can.
Be coachable, get good grades, run fast, stay out of trouble and you "should" be fine. If for some reason you are mistreated, starting in October you are going to be able to put your name on a "free agency" list and can be contacted by other schools that may appreciate you more.
But if you are looking for someone to tell you that your scholarship is guaranteed no matter what you do, good luck believing that, and good luck in the real world. No such thing as a free lunch.
You are fine if you do well in the classroom and follow all team rules.

Oregon had a half dozen women track athletes leave over the past few years for exactly this reason. I am not sure why you would be under the impression that it is against NCAA rules. If the offer is for only one year at a time, there is no requirement that it be renewed.
Some coaches will not reduce scholarships as a matter of principle, despite it not being against school policy.

The only people I ever saw get their scholarships reduced were people who had grades or disciplinary problems. Show up every day, work hard, and go to class. Do this and you'll be fine. My coach was a mean SOB at times, but if you worked hard and went to class you kept your scholarship.
