That’s right one heat. High school, college, everywhere. Let the coaches sort out the starters from the bench warmers. Shorter meets. Everyone can get on with their day.

define one heat
I’ve always been thinking the same thing! 10+ runners to a lane would be great entertainment! That would make track more popular for sure.

yep agree. and HS state meet, college conference and nationals meets should have 2 or 3 meets prior be play off or elimination rounds for time qualifiers.
Imagine twenty people in a 400m heat.

Yes, just what we want to run off participants. If you want to kill a sport that has such a small following now this would be a great step in doing this.
One of the great appeals to track was that there were no bench warmers, no cuts.
Terrible idea
You’re saying to simply not let people compete unless they are really good.
But you have to get experience in these slower heats to get good.

I agree with the op’s premise. Part of the everybody’s a winner and can participate is what makes track a second tier sport.
1 heat per event with either 8 or 9 competitors . Basically a championship meet format. They don’t have multiple basketball, football, baseball games so everyone gets playing time. People sit on the bench unless the coach plays them. This will save the sport from all day meets with 20 heats of jv 200m or whatever. Let the cream rise to the top.
Track is a completely different sports that’s those others.
You can’t have a Penn Relays type event in basketball.
Having one heat of each event will not make it a first tier sport.
only one heat = a Finals only meet to the OP.
