Do I have to get a release from my current coaches? I will finish my undergraduate degree and I want to apply to graduate school elsewhere, is this considered a transfer? Asking for a friend. I assume letsrun knows more than me but I may assume wrong. Give it your best shot.
*If you graduate you don't need permission. But if you have an RS CC season remaining it may be a very delicate situation to have to tell your current coach who may very much want you to return, that you want to go to BU.
*You can inquire whenever you wish in after jr year. I'd tell your coach in writing that you have graduate plans and you intend to leave after grad/ May. I'd contact another school telling them you have remaining elig. and you are interested in them. If you are good enough, they already know what seasons you have left and will get back to you (in some manner).
The answer is that you cannot talk to another coach before you graduate without a release.
After you graduate, you're a free agent. Talk to anyone about anything. But, by then, it's probably too late if you want $ and/or admissions assistance.
I would also say that, if you're in a P5 conference, most coaches won't let you transfer within conference.
Bottom line: talk to compliance at your current school.
Have a conversation with your current coach about this. Explain why you want to explore other options. If the reason might upset the coach than explain that you’re looking for a change of scenery, better grad program, etc. But I think that it’s important to talk to your current coach first.
Crank out all under grad work to get graduation squared away and enroll at new school as Grad Student.
Simple way to do it as I recall, no strings attached.
Talk to your athletic dept advisor.

If you are an athlete that has competed for 4 years... you are done.
