Hey LRC!
I finished up my last year in high school on June, and am heading to university in the fall. I’ve been training, albeit inconsistently, over the past couple of months in preparation for beginning my collegiate T&F career. However, I’ve been sort of clueless as to how it’s supposed to look like.
I left HS with PRs for 100m-3200m of 12.1/24.0/52.6/2:07/4:53/11:11, as well as a 17:38 in XC (5K).
I want to sort of tackle the middle distance side of things, as a senior year focused on sprints per the suggestion of my coaches didn’t really pan out as I suspected. All my PRs from 400m-3200m were from my junior year, with my sprint PRs and XC being from my senior year.
Anyway, my question is basically how am I supposed to go about training for middle distance (400m/800m/1500m/Mile) in college?
Because I’ve been so inconsistent this summer, I’m just barely building back up to around 30 miles, with the goal mileage being at about 50 or so. I don’t intend to compete in XC, since I’m so out of shape in comparison to the other athletes, but rather I’m going to ask the coaches if I can tryout for winter indoor track and outdoor spring track, so I want to be as prepared as possible.
My goal times are to be around 50-51 for 400m, low- to sub-2 for 800m, and under 4:40 for the Mile. Any suggestions or resources are greatly appreciated. I’m not so much of a mileage-junky as many distance athletes are, but I did adapt well to about 40-50 miles a week heading into senior year XC.
