He needs to drag his head out of the 90s EPO is not a performance enhancer. The idea that any drug or blood manipulation can give you more energy or allow your body to produce more energy is just plain nonsense.

What the world of sports science needs is a bioenergetics model, based on actual real science to demonstrate the principle of homeostasis. We all have a limited energy expenditure, beyond which iit is impossible to go. Doing so would lead to catastrophic failure and so the body has many mechanisms in place to prevent this. This folks is basic physiology and has been known since before blood manipulation started 50 years ago.

Expecting exercise physiologists to climb of the drug obsessed band wagon is unrealistic. Try talking to them about this issue and you will find that most of them have absolutely no clue about bioenergetics, even the one who have published papers on such issues as oxygen kinetics.

Elite athletes are going from 3000m SC directly to Marathon. According to IAAF, 2001 12 sub-2:08 Marathon performances; 2017, 68 sub-2:08 Marathon performances. Men capable of racing sub-2:08 Marathons are making too much money to bother racing 5000m or 10000m on track.

The idea that any drug or blood manipulation can give you more energy or allow your body to produce more energy is just plain nonsense.

I've never heard anyone argue that EPO, "gives you more energy," or allows your body to "produce more energy," so as far as I can tell this is just a straw man. you've set up something no one claims and then knocked it down quite adroitly, but it is actually meaningless.

my own understanding is that EPO increases the volume of haemoglobin, which itself does two things:

1. it permits the transport of a greater volume of oxygen

2. it permits the return of a greater volume of CO2.

so you can get more oxygen to the cells, and you can evacuate a greater volume of by-product from the cells. this does not necessarily, "give you more energy," it merely permits cellular metabolism to be more efficient. and this would be true of all cells, not just muscle cells.

and, I think it's also worth mentioning that sports TV commentary isn't really the place to start lecturing the public on how human physiology works. he could just be using, "EPO" as a kind of verbal shorthand for, "performance enhancing drugs."

Cottonshirt, you're saying the same thing in a different way. What you are proposing is a thermoregulatory impossibility.

Cellular metabolism is already as efficient as it will ever be in a healthy system.

If you want to talk about efficiency, talk about biomechanical effiency. Bekele et al are/were more biomechanically efficient. And the general trend for energy output in a bioenergteics model that correctly identifies this will show that the faster times come from less total energy output, not more as everyone believes.

The 'drug problem' in sport is a social construct, a mixture of pseudoscientific dogma and ages old superstition about drugs alowing people to go beyond whatever is perceived as humanly possible without them.

Yes. After 40 - 50 years of systematic doping, and lots of enhancements on the PED front, clean World Records do not exist anymore.

Hutchins doesn't have to mention EPO. We all know what he means. He's saying that the old record are 'enhanced' .
