Why is the 1500m not 1600m? The standard races shorter are 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 laps. Why wouldn't it have been set as 4 laps? Does anyone know the history of why 1500m was chosen?

Pierre de Coubertin. French 500m tracks. Therefore the distance races are multiples of 500.
