I'm a track and XC runner in college.
I'm 6'1 and 173 lbs,
Should I try to lighten up and if so whats a safe and healthy way for me to lose weight since running long distance isn't helping me cut down much.

Eat more vegetables. Eat fewer sweets.

Henry Marsh, a former USA Olympian and American Record Holder in the steeplechase, raced at 5'10" and 160lbs. Nobody called him fatboy while he was running a 8:09 steeplechase.
I would say it is quite heavy for long distance running. I am a middle distance runner and about the same weight at 6'5. And I was never of light build, but always in the muscular/athletic category...
I was exactly the same height and weight in college. It was too heavy.
people make it work. eat healthy, train smart, and the rest is out of your control.
intermittent fasting is a great way. Skip lunch its no big deal. You will burn more fat, save some energy even not having to digest, Make sure you eat a good breakfast and have some vegetable soup or something with supper to replenish. Also, just cut to 171. See how that works. If you have to cut to 169 do it, but dont get too drastic. 6 1 173 is on the heavy side for racing 8k, but its not all bad news. You might find you stride over rough terrain better with added power. Just, focus more on being lean than overly light.
the way I do IF is skipping breakfast, and then having a late lunch(2-3 pm). but yeah its great

Everything in the above post is pseudoscience BS. If you do the above you will feel like garbage. Just replace some carbs/sweets with more vegetables, drink a lot more water, drink your coffee black and slightly up your mileage. In 10-15 weeks you will have lost a healthy amount of weight for a distance runner.
Paul Tergat and Wilson Kipsang about your height and weigh about 135 ibs. So, you'll need to lose at least 30 pounds. How to do it? Lots of slow jogging 2 hours at a time twice a day to be in that fat burning zone. Diet should be only black coffee (drink at least 12 cups in the morning), seltzer water (to make your stomach fell full) and some oatmeal. Thank me later.
Quick recap:
Run twice a day at a slow jog to be in that fat burning zone.
Drink only black coffee to curb appetite and increase energy, water and seltzer water to make you feel full.
Eat only one kind of food per day. Why? Eating a boring diet will decrease chances of overeating. Don't believe me? Only eat oatmeal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You'll never lose more weight than from that regime.
How much mileage are you putting in?
i was 6'2" ~152lbs and on the bigger side of my d1 team. unless you're very muscular or a 400/800 runner who's running xc just because, I'd aim to lose a few.

I’m around the same weight and putting in 80-90 mpw (mostly easy/moderate). Adding mileage would be both difficult/not as productive as someone running 20-30 mpw.
