I had a friend tell me that they are garbage and getting something more mid distance specific could help shave time off my 800m, true or completely false?

they do matter but for an 800 you're looking at a second max, its more about the runner than the shoe, and btw your friend isnt wrong that there are better options out there but i'd put money out there that there are people who have run fadster than you and your friend in those spikes.
I once ran a PR in the 800 in trainers because I left my spikes at home.
Spikes matter, but like has been mentioned, the runner is more important. I was a team coach at a multisport games (no, not the Olympics or CommonWealth), and someone on the team ran 10.36 in crappy middle distance spikes because that's what he'd always used.
