Houlihan is coming around nicely. Tremendous fitness and form.
However, she is competing in an era where the last few medals have gone in about 14:30-type races and sub-3:55 type races. Does she have the fitness to run this pace and then unleash her deadly sprint?
Thoughts?
Can Houlihan Compete in sub-14:30/sub-3:55 Race?

She looks capable of 3:55 and 14:45 so she can certainly compete.

There has not been a recent women’s 1500m championship won in sub-4. Dibaba is the only woman in the last 2 decades to ever go sub-3:55. It is entirely incorrect to suggest that a women’s 1500m medalist has to kick off of 3:55 pace, because Dibaba is literally the only woman in decades who could potentially do that. Jenny Simpson can still win 1500m medals, so Houlihan might have a shot. Very unlikely in the 5000m, though.

She's barely sub 4 and not sub 15. No.

And Dibaba's due to get popped soon, or we can hope at least. I'm not entirely convinced that Houlihan is clean, but if she WERE able to compete in a 3:55 race then it'd be strong evidence that she's not, so lets hope she can't. -

What a sad fan you must be if you have the mentality of everyone who runs fast must be doping. How do you enjoy watching track if you don't want to see fast times? -
It's not the fact that she runs fast; it's the fact that her coach is a confirmed doper.
-
I think she has a shot for 3'57 in the 1500m but no way she runs under 14'45 over the 5k.

Let’s see some confirmation then, buddy. -

I think it’s actually the fact that you’re a confirmed troll. -

What more confirmation do you need than Jama Aden getting caught with pre-filled syringes of EPO, which he claimed were for himself??? Genzebe Dibaba is the most brazen doper currently in the sport, and you can watch her times ebb and flow by when she's obviously been able to be on and off the juice. It's shameful to watch. -

A clean 3:50 woman (which of course has never existed) doesn't come in 12th in a world championship final in 4:06. That would just never happen. -

we will see (next year though, she's not running any 5ks apparently this year) -

OP,
I'm curious as to why you think Houlihan - one of the best women's pros in the world - would start competing in mixed gender all-comers meets? She can make a lot of money on the DL circuit competing in women's races.
Why would she start running mixed-gender races? Simply to get 3:55 competition?
In the history of the world, a non-Chiese women has never run 3:55 and lost.
The fastest runner-up showing for a non-chinese was Hassan's 3:56.05 in Monaco in 2015. -

I'm not talking about Dibaba, I'm talking about Houlihan. Ehse writes "lets hope she can't" run 3:55 because that would supposedly mean she is doping. That is a sad way to be a fan of the sport. I would love to see Houlihan pop a 3:55 or better, and if she ran it I would definitely not attribute it to doping. Enjoy watching amazing performances and times and only worry about doping when someone fails a test. -

I wrote nothing of the sort. That guy who quoted me isn’t me, and you shouldn’t have assumed it was. I promise that I worry a whole lot less about doping than the majority here seem to. -

Jager is likely doping per WADA, that's just a fact and part of the fancy bears data release, so we know BTC is not impervious to it as their best runner is likely a doper. So, Houlihan has exploded over the past season and is flashing closing speed that she has never previously been capable of with her 2:01 800 PR. It's healthy to have a dose of skepticism about that, especially in this sport where it's a major issue. -

Considering that the fancybears data was released by Russia to embarrass the West, following it's expulsion from the Olympics, I wouldn't consider any information (without corroboration I might add) as credible. But go ahead sip your koolaid and hop on the Russian train comrade. -

No, it's not healthy to doubt impressive performances. That is very unhealthy for the sport. I, for one, love to see the best athletes run fast times/splits and always like to see improvements in runners I've followed for years. Why do you even watch running if you suspect doping whenever somebody becomes too dominant? Do you do the same for Federer, Lebron, or Brady?
