What kind of 5k/10k track times would you expect someone capable of running 2:19:00 to be able to run? Assume the marathon was run on a fast course during a good time of year. Slowest 5k/10k times and average 5k/10k times of someone in that range. Obviously the marathon isn't run off 5k training and is a different beast.
Probably 29 flat at the slowest. There are exceptions, but those are not the norm.

Nice, that's good to hear I could easily run that. Maybe I should consider trying out for the Marathon trials. So if a 29 minute 5k should do it what do you think I would need for a 10k?
Probably need a sub 14:30 5k pr for a sub 2:19 marathon.

Obviously a fast 5k is helpful, but the key, at least for me, is having the strength to run at a high percentage of my 5k pace for the marathon.
I ran 13:42/28:19 but could only manage a 2:20:13 PR in my first marathon of four (concluded the event was not for me).
Thats impressive! I appreciate all the responses btw! I have similar 5k/10k times to yours now but plan to improve a lot over the next few years. I'm sure you could run a much faster 5k/10k on the track than those prs now or in your marathon/half marathon shape, especially 10k. Hopefully I can have similar success transitioning. I've done fast long runs occasionally that give me half/marathon hope. I'm looking to be in the 29:40s or so in college and then hopefully get a little stronger after and try to run a fast half to get me ready for a marathon.
Those are some stud prs! Did you train specifically for the marathon? It seems as though you would be able to run a good amount faster if the conditions and training were there. I haven't really looked for the marathon I would run but preferably it wouldnt be in hot or hilly conditions. Like a fall marathon on a flat course.
