Seriously. Best in the world right now in the 400 and 400h. Tons of strength and gorgeous fluid stride. She could have waltzed onto that track and at least run 2:02.

I used to think she had 800m potential. You are wrong regarding 400m. McLaughlin would've been 3rd yesterday in 400m. If her coaches at KY thought she had sub-90 potential in 600m, they would have raced her in 600m indoor. McLaughlin is not a sub-2:05 800m runner at this time. I estimate her to be a 92.5 600m athlete somewhere around 2:07.5 for 800m.
With training, she could run 2:08. I have tried to get several 50 second 400 guys to run the 4x800 by training them for a few weeks. Most can go out in 60 looking great and then they hit the 600 mark and it is completely over.
You guys greatly underestimate her. With a year's training she'd be running 1:59.

i think middle distance runners underestimate the difficulty some sprinters have with endurance. Having said that ........i bet most of the runners who can do about 2:00 flat for 800m would hate to race someone who can do 50 for 4.
Ummmm..... no. Sydney's got impossible anaerobic strength. But the 800 is still an aerobic event. Sammy Watson would whup her 7 days/week, and so would the other 800 women that COULD have beat Watson in different racing environments.
Ashley Taylor (third) was a 400/400h runner in HS. She ran her first 800 two years ago, her first ever 1500 was this year (4.20). So you never know.

No he wouldn’t have because 90 seconds for 600m is sh!t compared to 50.3.
She can prob run closer to 2:00 than you think but it’s still not worth running .

You responded to me with such intensity and authority. If McLaughlin has/had any where near sub-90 600m ability or as you said 2:00 800m ability, only her U. of Kentucky coaches/teammates, or Union Catholic coaches/teammates or her immediate family would know. Which are you? If you are not in one of those three groups, you are an illogical fan.

I don’t see anything in his reasoning that’s illogical.
She was an extremely slow high school XC runner, two or three miles. High school coaches would not race McLaughlin at any distance longer than 400m. College coaches would not race McLaughlin at any distance longer than 400m. There is no logical basis to assume McLaughlin is a 2:00 800m runner. Unless someone has seen her train, any statement regarding McLaughlin as an 800m runner is based on something else besides evidence.
while it is hard to speculate, it does seem logical that hypothetically she could run a good 800
This assumption that 400m/400mH runners can easily step up to the 800m and dominate is hogwash. Even 400m/800m runners like Brazier have to do some level of endurance training. Does McLaughlin ever go for 5-7 miles in training? I doubt it.
Every good 400 runner thinks they can move up to the 800. After all, a 60-second 400 would be "jogging" for a 50 second runner. Just like Usain Bolt could "jog" a 42-second 400, right?
Don't under estimate the 800 meter ability of top tier 400 hurdlers. I used to compete against a guy named Joey Woody in college who was a world championship silver medalist in the 400 hurdles, a world championship gold medalist on the 4X400 relay and was also on the world indoor record 4X800 team with Paranya, Krummenacker and Kenah. He ran sub 48 in the 400 hurdles and had an 800 PR in the 1:48 range. There is a big difference between a 400 runner and a 400 hurdler. If you had ever run the 400 hurdles, you would understand.
It's idiotic to think that she would have waltzed on the track and cranked out a 2:02 on Saturday. It's even more idiotic to think that her coaches don't believe her to have sub 90 600m potential.
I heard that she time-trialed a 2:02 in practice. (for real)
Not sure if she looked relaxed though.
she wouldn't do it at NCAAs though because she's already doing 3 events
So what if Sydney could win the NCAA 800, she's eyeing a World Record in the 400H. The 400 is obviously her distance, no need to even speculate what she could do at a longer distance. I think she'll be just fine running sub 50 in the 400m and sub 53 (and maybe sub 52) in the 400H during her career.
