That to me suggests that asics and nike can't make a shoe that works. If you have a great design, don't change it! Do people really believe these shoes have gotten better 25-35 times?

People will always buy the ‘new model’. Of anything.
The Pegasus was first introduced back in 1983, and probably has been one of their most enduring shoes. I know I got a pair of them back in 1983. I guess they keep making minor changes each year to keep it new and "fresh". I think that's called "marketing". Haven't worn any Nike shoes in at least 10 years so can't comment on how they are now.
I just got the 35 after using the 34. The upper is nicer but tbh I like the old sole style better I think. But yeah, they basically just rebrand the same shoe over and over aside from the odd year where actually updates are made. I guess you could consider the new model to more of a legitimate change though. On the plus side it means you can get the older models, which are basically the same shoe, for discounted prices.

Part of it is marketing - issue an updated model each year so that the fan base has something to crave for. The other part is keeping your development department and test department occupied. If a company involved in manufacturing a product with a high technical content (athletic shoes, cars, cell phones) were to announce that they had got it right and would not be releasing any new upgrades for five years then their high tech staff would leave for other companies. Basically it is a case of use it or loose it. How many companies today can design an analogue phone or a CRT TV without going into the archives, relearning the process and hiring back retirees?
I worked in aerospace and we reckoned that if we didn't have anything new coming down the pipeline every five years we would loose the ability to create original designs.
I hear your pain OP.
Every single year - like a complete SUCKER - I think to myself "this is it, the peg xx's were amazing, these guys have finally cracked it!" and wait for the news conference from Nike HQ were they announce that they're completely shutting down their R&D section because they simply cannot make shoes any better EVER, so that year's models across their entire range will be the last they develop. Every single year like a complete Moran I think this is going to happen but no - they just keep making new shoes!!
Innovate, always. It's marketing 101 with any consumer product.

Some friends at Boeing told me they had to go for the Dreamliner as the debacle with the Cronic Snoozer meant they were running out of time as the last clean sheet aircraft they had developed was the 777 in 1994. Fortunately the Dreamliner turned out to be the right product at the right time.
