Hobby jogger here. I’m just starting my more structured training for the Chicago marathon and currently run 7-10 hrs a week. I’m not sure whether to do a Hadd style build up with two longer sessions during the week that are a bit quicker than easy runs -for me with a recent 5k of 19.55 and having recently done these Hadd “workouts”with a HRM (starting off at 80-83% HRM and moving up to higher HR when you can run for an hr and HR doesn’t rise) it works out to an hr of quicker running at about 5.25/k as my HR is not yet stable at 80-83%
Greg McMillan however recommends doing this longer tempo type run at 2.5hr pace which for me is 4.31/k for an hr based off his online calculator. When I run at this pace my HR is way over the 83-85% MHR that Hadd suggests you commence these workouts at. So using these two different approaches for 60 mins of uptempo running there is quite a difference in pace.
Then Hanson’s suggests doing these at marathon pace which for me according to McMillan’s calculator is 4.36/k. Not as much difference there but still a difference -especially after 60-75 minutes of running at these differing paces. Any suggestions as to what would work or experience with the different methods? This doesn’t even look at the difference in approaches to long runs- using Hadd, I run slower based on HR, McMillan quicker based on suggested paces( that’s even though I tend to run at the very slowest suggested pace ) and Hanson’s suggested long run pace is quicker again puts my HR way over what Hadd recommends for long runs.
Any help would be great!
