How do runners qualify because I saw today 8-13 runners in the 4a 3200 are from loudon valley. I’m from Ohio where the top 2 runners from each team compete in district prelims, then district finals where top four move to regionals and top four from regionals go to state.(4 regions) We also have 2 at large time qualifiers which are next 2 fastest time from any region.
It's quite simple really. Run faster than everyone else. Problem solved, you just qualified!

You have to be the one fast guy or the 20 other mediocre runners that wouldn’t make it out of a regional meet in California.

More than two runners from each team can compete at districts if they meet a time qualifier
You can advance by place or by prior qualifying performance.
Generally there are three levels, district, region and state.
Each level has qualification performance standard, generally based on a five year rolling avg of prior years results,. At the state level, this is generally based on the 8th place finisher each year.
Usually each team gets 3 entries for each individual event (and one per relay event) at districts which they can fill however they want. If a team has more than three kids that meet the performance standard during that season, they may enter as many as have met the standard.
At districts (and regions) the top x performers (usually 3 or 4) advance by place. Those who have previously met the standard may also enter at the next level (regardless of whether they competed in that event at the prior level).
A team like LV which competes in a midsize school division and has such depth of high performers (relative to the AQ standards) can truly be outliers in this system, having 8-9 entrants in the individual ditance events.
It’s crazy that the number of LV kids that ran in the 4A boys 3200 race at the state meet (9) is greater than the number of people per team allowed to race at the 4A state XC meet (7).
It helps though because no one from Loudoun Valley made state for field events such as jumping and throwing. So they try to get as many points from as many people as possible in distance events.

That is interesting. I wish GA had had such a system my senior year. Only the top 2 from each subregion went to region. I ran faster times that winners of several other region championships. Oh well...
I am having difficulty understanding your fourth sentence. Personally, I wish Georgia held student athletes to a higher educational standard.
For VHSL , It's top 2 (or 3) from each region PLUS auto-qualifiers that make the standard. So if you're in Valleys region, or on Valley, your best bet is to make the cut. Conference meet with valley in it was crazy. The fast heat had one kid who wasn't valley.
If you look at the state event entry list (dunno what running calls it) , it's obvious for 4a who were the kids not from valleys region, who didn't make the state cut.
Same thing for swimming. My kid was not swum at regionals by the coach (he'd have won), to make room for another teammate to place, who didn't make the cut time.
I personally think it ought to be a cut time, or fill 3 heats, vs advance kids who're slower , just not in the fast conference. It's kinda a holdover from football and basketball.

VA coach here, qualifying can happen two ways: top 4 in region or hit the standard. The standard is essentially the previous 6 year average ((last years standard*5 + last years 8th place) / 6).
Personally, I like the state qualifying process. It rewards region winners and allows for studs that have an off day at the region to still race at state.
LV is not the only team that advances a lot of people to state. Check out 6A Western Branch in the hurdles/sprints.
The Hunters are killing it... Excited to have them in 5A in two years!

I don't believe LV is slated to be 5A any time soon. Based on enrollment, they fall in the middle of the 4A class. using the March 31 ADM numbers released by the VHSL.

I do too. The only issue with time standards based on state performances is that you occasionally have week standards like the 3200m. That particular race typically goes slow because it's in the morning, sometimes hot, and kids may hold back in order to double in the 1600. That was not the case this year in 4A, but it is in many years.
