Azuza invitational mile 2016 had 11 boys under 4:10 and 3 under 4:05

Any Adidas HS boys dream mile.

The Brooks PR Invitational is next Friday, 8 June 2018. It's possible that they could surpass this.

Surprised Doug Padilla didn't make the final but maybe that's because he was from northern California.

Jay Woods is one of the nicest and most humblest guys you could ever meet. He was just another one of the guys at BYU. On a sad note, he was fishing with Paul Cummings in Utah on that September day when their boat capsized and Paul drowned.

Modern HS boys are much faster and have way more depth today than ever before. Just off of the top of my head, I can name two meets that may have hosted the fastest fields ever.

Of course, every race is different in tactics, wind, humidity, rain, track surface, performance enhancing drug intake, age cheating, Las Vegas gambling corruption influences, etc. Just kidding (maybe?) about the last few. The above are averages for an arbitrary eight runners. To satisfy my curiosity, here are those races when the top six are averaged (slowest to fastest):

The average of the '83 WA State Meet top 6's converted mile times is 4:10.30.

The '74 Cal State Meet is 4:08.3.

The '16 Azuza Meet of Champions is 4:05.92.

The '15 Adidas Grand Prix Dream Mile is 4:04.00.

The '17 Brooks PR Mile is 4:03.42.

There are other meets to consider, too. This isn't a put-down of any runners, just a numbers crunching exercise.

i agree with the gist of your post, but the phrase above, which has two parts (one of which you repeat later in the post), is only half true. they are not much faster--3 of the 10 american h.s. sub-4s are still from the 60s, and you could argue that all their times are intrinsically faster than the 21st century sub-4s except for alan webb, and maybe drew hunter. what could these guys (and guys like lindgren or kimball) have done with lighter footwear and all-weather tracks? also, jim ryun remains the only h.s. junior to break 4 (not sure how many of them broke it more than once besides ryun, webb and hunter).

but i'd have to guess they do have way more depth, but that depth may come in the 4:04-4:10 range (this is just a guess); there's also some incredible consistency--it seems like every year now there's someone breaking 4, or coming very close...

I had never seen the 1974 Cal results, but that resultdoesn't surprise me. I was under the assumption that the '83 WA race was the "gold standard" until the all-star races really got going. Ah, pre-internet days. Future 3:54 miler John Quade finished 9th. I actually coached one of the top 8 guys in that race.

Notice the time for Ton Bohannon in second. Luke George ran 4:06.09 and still doesn't have the school record at Issaquah.

An amazing aspect of the Azusa meet with it's 11 under 4:10 (unmatched?), is that it was a "local" meet of southern California runners. It didn't even include top runners from northern California like Cooper Teare, Luis Grijalva and Michael Vernau. And it was in March. Granted SoCal is pretty big, but still a small pool of runners compared to a national level meet.

Grew up in the Bay Area. Richard Kimball was a name I saw frequently in the late 90s as he typically held the local stadium records. My team was competitive with DLS at the time (they beat us to go to State champs). Always intrigued by him--what did he do after DLS? College? Any big races after? Oly trials?
