The Olympic silver medallist at 5,000 meters at the 1976 Games and one time world record holder at 5,000 meters moved onto whatever's next this morning in New Zealand. Condolences to his family and friends of whom there were quite a few.

Terribly sad news. He was representative of a great running generation from New Zealand.
I had not known that Dick was born in the Netherlands. I am sure it was common knowledge for many of you. Some of Prefontaine’s generation passing away. RIP
A sad day in the T&F in world. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12059945
One of my favorite running photos is the finish of the 1976 5,000 final.
FWIW, the oral cancer was HPV related, that is, sexually transmitted. There is a vaccine for this, which I would recommend for all eligible.
Sad, sad news, a great character of athletics. RIP. A real racer.
Check out some of the photos on one the pages, a great one of him holding the stop watch for Frank Shorter in Colorado.

Coincidentally, I first met Quax on a 20 mile run with Jos Hermens in Nijmegen NDL. My introduction to the big leagues.
Quax was fairly active on social media to the end, so the news was quite a shock.
RIP, Mr Quax. You had a good run.
Rest In Peace

Sad to hear this news. I met him in Frank Shorter's store after he had broken the WR for 5000M. He was very friendly and talked to me for a while. I also remember seeing him run on the Mesa trail a few times with Shorter and Dixon, as they passed me they said to join them, I just laughed as there was no way I could run their pace, but I appreciated the kind gesture.
Oh, my. He was MUCH too young! He was definitely a very fine runner, in that era of very fine New Zealand runners. What a loss.

I think he was posting on Facebook less than a week ago. I'd been told maybe a month ago that he wasn't doing well but I wondered how accurate that was because he was so active there.

Link re "the oral cancer was HPV related"?
Sorry to hear this. I met him once at the UCSB track, introduced by Arch Jelly, coach for New Zealand (and John Walker's coach), as the NZ team was getting ready for the Commonwealth games in 1978. RIP.

He said so himself.
Dick is part of the Lydiard legacy. Anyone who forgets that forgets the legacy that made New Zealand the torch of greatness. I am sure Dick is running in his new environment and being a kick-ass at that.
Here's a gem. 1977 Weltklasse Zurich. Rono, Yifter, WR-holder Quax, Kimombwa, Kimeto and Liquori rallies from way back.
