Looked like the Hudson runner veered out and knocked the other runner to the track. Definitely interference.

Drifting to lane 3. Okay in the Diamond League, not in Ohio.

Great call. Just because you're the best doesn't mean you can make your own rules.

Good comparison to Chelimo. I have no problem with the dq. The other runner owned that space.

Yeah, I don't understand why there would be any controversy around the DQ.

Clear interference, but it seems more sensible to me to knock them back to 2nd, rather than an outright DQ.

Let the kids run. Didn't look like it would have made any difference if they stayed in lane 1. Didn't look like they hindered the other team in any way.

Good call. It's kind of unfortunate that the sport doesn't really allow for a less stringent penalty than a DQ, though.

It might be a good idea for high school associations to provide an alternate route into the state championship for top performers. Why not have a qualifying standard that can be hit at any time during the season in addition to having auto-qualifiers at the district meet? The standard could be stiff enough that district championships remain the main qualifying event. Maybe the third or fifth place time for each event at states becomes the next year's autoqualifier time.

While I think the call was right, I also think it benefits everyone to have a system that puts the best individuals and teams on the line at the state championship.

Because his lane-spanding had nothing to do with 3 and 4, who were, like, two weeks behind. He interfered with one runner...that runner should get the bump and win, but his foul didn't give him an advantage over 3 and 4, so why outright DQ?

That’s not really how racing sports operate. Besides, the DQ should serve as a deterrent to future potential interferers.

That was a totally legit finish. The kid in white drifted from lane one to two while he still had the lead, which is fully allowed. Once in lane two he no longer encroached on the kid in red who stumbled on his own accord. No foul.

You guys need to go to real track meets once in a while.

I think it is clear Hudson interfered but an outright DQ seems like a harsh punishment for a team that beat 3rd and 4th so convincingly. I don't think another team was within 200m.

For those saying they should just bump Hudson to 2nd place, how would you list it in the results? Add time onto Hudson's performance, deduct time from the other team's performance, or list the actual times they finished but explain on the side that they are bumped to #2 for interfering?

Dude, whatever. I'm aware of how "racing sports" operate. And T&F does actually operate consistent with what I'm saying, such as when "extra" athletes are advanced through to the next heat for a variety of circumstances at the international level. It's nonsensical to DQ someone who could have stopped, tied his shoe, checked his instagram feed, ordered a pizza, and still taken 2nd (a qualifying position) by a week and change. And not only that....a high school kid. DQ is needlessly cruel here.

Then that kid should have been smart enough to stop, tie his shoe and get a selfie instead of interfering and tripping the other kid. Stupid and selfish to do that when he and his teammates already qualified. Go beat that other team next week.

Totally agree with No DQ. The kid in white didn’t impede the kid in red over the last ~50m. He drifted off the curb but was trailing when they pass the camera. He fought back and the kid in red fell but no fault of the kid in white.

Extra athletes are only advanced when they are the victim, not the one committing the foul. The margin of victory shouldn’t matter when applying the rules.
