Our coach is a successful man but he just doesn't understand the concept that distance running is mental. He puts the "good" runners in 3 events and allows those who he doesn't focus on to just do one (their main event.) Districts was about 3 weeks ago and I was very ignorant as it is my first track season. I asked why I was in 3 events (4x8, 1600, 3200) and he said it was because of points. Points do not earn anything at districts, except a trophy as a title. Our boys team nearly got last thanks to this idea. I was ranked 14th in the 1600, and I would need to PR by ~12 seconds to score. Our 4x8 team had an athlete who has had a few rough patches and has a PR of 2:12, but ended up running closer to 2:30. If we had run our best team, we would have potentially won. 3 of the 4 athletes PR'd, but we placed 6th and need 4th to move on. The 3200 is my main event, and it was less than an hour away from the mile. My knee began to swell up but I still ran. I felt no pain, and I could have placed 5th. Although there is really no one to blame, I was tripped halfway through the race and couldn't recover. I finished 8th.
Now, I am getting prepared for cross country. If I was able to run 10:20 for 3200 in track, about where should I be during cross? I understand courses can vary but about what would be an average time? 17:00-17:30?
