I'm sure that as a country we'll be able to deal with this gesture for two men who stood up to a country that has been f***ing them in the ass for the last 200 years.

I'm so glad those two colored boys did that. I mean it changed the world in such a positive way. Positive results we've seen are................
Ah f***, never mind.

Show me the 200 year old guy that this has been happening to. I mean christ, there was an article on the news here 2 days ago where a group of kids were taken out of school (permission given by the schools) and taken to an airfield where they met with several ex-war pilots who then took them flying in planes and tried to introduce them to the world of flying. there were several other students who were not allowed to go and they were a little upset that they were not chosen. Oh why were they not chosen? They were white! The only requirement for a student to go was that they had to be black. Can't have it both ways fellas.
If anything reverse racism has been running wild in this country for the last 20 years, and it is getting worse.
Now if you own an NFL team, you can't interview who you want and hire who you want, the league mandates you interview black coaches, and they are even considering making a mandatory percentage of coaches be black, so if the quota isn't met and you really want to hire Joe Whitey, sorry you can't. Gotta hire a black guy. How is that fair to anyone?
Anyone else think it's sad that Tommie Smith and John Carlos are having a statue put up honoring what they did in the Olympic medal ceremonies? Anyone who knows what the black power (not black pride, as ESPN.com mistakenly referred to it) movement stood for I would think would be ashamed that the statue is going up. Black power stood for separatism and anti-white hatred, not unity for all Americans or people of all races for that matter.
As an additional point, I also think the flag and nationl anthem deserve some respect, so I'm against honoring a famous instance of disrespect against them. I'm sure someone on here will wish the veterans a happy Memorial Day by writing something about how the flag doesn't mean anything, etc.
If Tommie Smith and John Carlos were so anti-white..I guess Peter Norman...the WHITE AUSTRALIAN SILVER MEDALIST must have been anti-white as well since he participated in the protest....
Get your facts straight!

The way Norman participated was by wearing a pin supporting human rights, he didn't give the black power salute. Since you seem to have such a great understanding of history, why don't you tell me whate the black power salute was all about. Why don't you start with its roots and go from there. Until then, I suggest YOU get YOUR facts straight and quit trying to revise history, that only works on the ignorant.
i don't see how what they did was disrespectful to the flag or anyone else.
He's saying that it is disrespectful to whites because it was an anti-white action.

yeah, what an outrage. i guess holding your black gloved fist in the air ranks right up there with enslaving a group of people, or not allowing them to attend your schools or drink from your water fountains, as moments of disrespect.
i can't believe the starter of this thread. what carlos and smith did was a non-violent airing of their beliefs. they were silent, they were dignified, they were still during the national anthem. in no way did they disrepect the flag, the anthem, or the united states.
it should give any thinking person pause to hear that to respect the flag and anthem requires you to look in admiration upon it and pledge every ounce of your trust in it. the flag is a symbol - and symbols mean different things to different people. i'm sure the latvians weren't exactly tearing up when the USSR flag was flying over their heads. and i don't think the irish get all sentimental when they see the union jack.
sad that it is that dissent of any form is labelled unpatriotic or disrespectful. just today i saw a pick-up truck driving down the highway with an american flag taped down over the hood. judging from the NRA sticker on the bumper - i'm sure the guy fancies himself a real patriotic american. though i'm not sure he knows how to properly respect the flag.
Incindentally..PETER NORMAN WORE THE PIN AFTER DISCSSUING THE PROTEST WITH CARLOS AND SMITH...YOU CANNOT DETACH ONE ACTION FROM THE OTHER..since you seem to know more thanme about the symbolism of the "Black Power"..why don't you inform me as well as the others on this message board. I guess Lee Evans, Larr James and Vincent Matthews were anti-white as well for wearing their black berets on the stand...and especially when Lee Evans said "I won this medal for all the Blacks..and my white friends too..."
I'm a sport psych and soc prof at SJSU (and former runner for UT), and have seen Carlos and Smith talk a couple times. Their stories are something, and how their differing backgrounds led them both to what they did on the medal stand are really potent. That said, regardless of your views on their symbolic stand against the oppression of African Americans, and for human rights, in general, it is certainly noteworthy that the university took over 30 years to even get to the point where such a tribute is in the works.
For a very good, nuanced treatment of the subject, check out:

I'm so glad to see you're back. If only the American coaches could turn out athletes of the same caliber as the comedians turned out by our public school system we'd have guys running sub 26 for 10 000m.
How do you possibly define your own self-worth in a world where you obviously LOVE running, but cannot compete with the people that you consider inferior?
In fact, I don't suppose that you compete with a lot of the more educated African Americans in the job market either (though I will concede that you probably get a better Burger King promotion off less work than your African American colleagues).
Perhaps you are really good at knitting or synchronized swimming and this enables you to maintain a sense of being needed in this world.
I would recommend another "hobby" if you don't have one.
And out of curiosity... does your blood boil that my g/f is African?

For one, they helped make overt expressions of racism unacceptable, as evidenced by the fact that the cowards who spew this bile on the Internet don't even have the guts to use their real name.
Hell, even Trent Lott knows better now.
Using the same concept, I expect to play for the UNC basketball team since white basketball players are an underrepresented minority at the school. Then I will brand them as racist when they refuse.
Do you have the slightest idea how pathetic you sound to 99% of the world's population? Of course, there are instances of reverse racism in this country today... and personally I DO disagree with them... BUT they are nothing compared to the racism that still exists here and now. Your arguments are weak and generally not worth the time that it takes to read them. I am sure that you are a "Christian" BY NAME, but it is about time that you started asking yourself whether you are REALLY living the way that God would want you to live... or the way that some bigotted and bitter relatives and friends that have come before you would want you to live. I don't even have any issue with you myself... for the simple reason that MOST racists (black or white) are generally too weak and cowardly to express their hatred in the general public. If God is willing I will never have to run across someone that has become so twisted and hateful in my whole life.
One of the Black Power movement's slogans was "Kill Whitey". Even if those two were not avid anti-white racists, the movement they were supporting and advancing WAS anti-white. There's no two ways around it. It was also an unabashadly pro-male movement.
I sure understand why the black population of this country should be pissed off as all hell... but the Black Power movement was NOT about equality. It was about just what it says it's about - black power, and domination of the white man (as the white man had done to the black man for so many years).
We should not glorify those associated with an explicitly violent movement. Build a Martin Luther King Jr. statue instead.
I essentially agree with you (although my knowledge of the "Black Power" movement is almost non-existent). This does not, however, detract from the stupidity of the previous post or poster.
