Clayton Murphy is running the 800m in Doha DL - Why?

Clayton has an olympic medal, he can literally do whatever he wants, if he wants to fly to doha and walk the race, he can

Also, why do you say 'current shape?'

He might not be in his 1:42 high form, but he was in 1:46 shape indoors so I assume he's probably in slightly better shape now. And with an olympic bronze medal it probably isn't hard to get into DL 800m races.

Because just a little over a week ago he ran 1:47.22 losing to 20 year old Mexican Jesus Lopez.

Did you notice the two other guys in the Doha start list with any times for the season went slower? Presumably you think they, like Murphy, also do not understand high level 800 running like you do?

Lol. Thanks all-knowing one. Sure he could be training through, yet I don't see him running faster then 1:45....ending up in 4th or 5th. People, usually E. Africans, go to Doha to blast one out the park. Do you see Murphy blasting one out the park at this point? Why not wait for Pre?

Are you aware that "then" and "than" are two different words with different meanings?

4th place gets $3000 plus whatever appearance fee he may have received as an Olympic medalist.

Gets some DL experience plus a few grand...not a bad weekend.

Running is his job. Do you bail on work every day that you aren't feeling 100%?

Odds are if LRC is questioning the decision then it must be a good one.

Maybe his girlfriend is coming along? If someone's was paying me/us to go visit a new country for a couple of days and rub my olympic medal elbows with the ones paying, we'd do it.

Definitely just a middle eastern vacation it seems. Not sure how fun the Doha area is...it's no Dubai.

With Simpson, Taylor, Clement & Lyles, this is the most top Americans I've ever seen run in Doha.

That really doesn't seem like a terrible outcome. As an Olympic medalist, he'll be getting a pretty generous appearance fee to fly over there. He'll hope to get in a good, fast race, and even if he can't stick with the leaders, it'll be a good reminder of what it's like to be in a 1:43 race. Of any year, this one (with no major championships) is a good one to get out on the circuit, run a bunch of races, and make some money (which he wasn't able to do in his first post-Olympic-medal year).

it's what he does for a living. If he has to run in the back of the pack at least he's out there and showing up, and will have that much more recent experience for the next time

Worlds are in Doha next year. I would be interested in going out to get a lay of the land...
