I’m going on year 9 in the Midwest with nary a visit to the gulf coast (not sure Orlando, FL qualifies) but I think that the Midwest ain’t so bad.
We just had a pretty rough winter (Wisconsin, formerly Illinois), yet even the East coast got shellacked. The winter involved more slogs than I can ever remember. Usually there are some respites where you can test speed a bit more, but this year seemed devoid.
And yet, with that, temperatures in the upper 50s/low 60s today allowed me to really rip one without going to the well. I was surprised.
I think that’s where OP’s reference to hills is credible as those have always been secret speed for me. 2/3 of my runs probably start with an uphill mile and while it seems a struggle every time, the benefits seem to be there. With that, we’ll see what the summer has in store. Whatever the humidity I can’t imagine it’s worse than Gulf Coast, though perhaps some of them are moderated by bodies of water and air currents?
Did I tire of the winter this year? Absolutely. Was I finally considering that device called a treadmill? Yes (primarily so I won’t fall and break my a$$ on the often suspect footing). But if you can survive it, you can thrive in it.
