Jager almost walked down in the last 50m by virtual unknown in a 13:25 race. Shouldn't be struggling in the last 400m like that. Hope that was just a typical rust buster.
Editor's note: WE made the title more descriptive. It was initially "Jager looked BAD"
Should we be worried? Jager looked BAD running 13:25 tonight.

Rust buster. Some go better than others. -
It's a long season- he'll be peaking in Europe this August.
These races don't matter- they're just part of the long plan. -
Lower RBC count.

Hope so. Looked strong until Lomong dropped. -
Why worry about performances of a pro athlete whom we are not acquainted with?
-
Was the "virtual unknown" Coebra? He's finally rounding in to form!
-
Should we be worried? Probably not. But maybe Jager should be worried.

Anyone with a background on Isaac Kimeli?

It's April, it's a low-key meet, and he probably trained through it. I don't see any reason for concern. -
Since when is winning a season opener in 13:24 reason for concern?

I don't want Jager to be in top form in Mid April. -
over the years, i've closely tracked our runners and the difference you get in a race (or specific workout) when the legs are loaded vs. unloaded (mini-taper) and the effect is about 1 to 2%. This is an important factor to have your finger on as a coach.
Interestingly, this fits with much of the studies on tapering (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17762369 ).
A 2% difference on Jager's time tonight brings him down to about 13:10 to 13:15...and one obviously assumes the has completely trained through this race (given it is mid-April). -

I'm guessing that Evan and Jerry Schumacher consider Evan's performance last night to be right on track with where they want him to be at this point in the season. And it's a 13:25! If he had limped home in 14:25 or slower I think we could be a little more worried. -
As many posters have pointed out, it's April and his first race of the season. He did all of the work the last 1600 and only faltered the last 100 meters.
Should we be worried that Jager is on pace to have a poor season, probably not.
Better question, was this a benchmark that indicates Evan has made significant improvements in the offseason, definitely not. -
Context OP. Context, perhaps it was a badly executed race, but it is still probably in the top 10 times run this year, at this point.

It's April. End of story.

Typically a 1500 guy (3:37 PR), and I don’t think he really runs the 5k much. He did have a 13:34 PR before this though. Euro U23 xc champ in 2016 and is one of the best in Belgium. Originally from Kenya I think.

Only if he warmed up with a set of 367 meter runs on a treadmill followed by a 3.16 run at 8:46 pace
