I've read somewhere that he used to wear the Asics Hyperspeed 7. Since they've discontinued those shoes, does anyone know what shoes Yuki Kawauchi may have been wearing in Boston?
Thanks.

They were Mizuno I know that much. Looked quite old school as well.
ok I lied (or just got it wrong lol) they were Asics as you say
ASICS makes different shoes for the Japanese market as well as custom models of the same. You probably can't pick up a pair at your local shoe store.
Besides they weren't the key to his win if you're thinking of buying some of the magic.
I was hoping that they were like a new version of the Hyperspeed 7. They were good shoes..
They were the Asics sortie RP. They definitely contributed to his stellar win! The sole has a traction pattern that performs in the rain

My question wouldn't be what he wore at the Boston but why Asics makes so many of their shoes unavailable for the U.S. market.

Asics has made some of their Japanese models available here, Running Warehouse has had a couple models of Tarther, the Lyte Racer and Sky Sensor recently. My Japanese Asics source tells me that Kawauchi was indeed in the Sortie Magic but was likely custom made with a bit more cushioning. I think the Sortie is really the only Japanese model they aren't selling in the US but you can get them on the internet.
based on reading a couple of detailed reviews online, the sortie is definitely a very different shoe than the hyperspeed
they really, really need to bring back the hyperspeed
has that ever happened? a shoe brought back from the dead based on demand by sub/elites if not general consumers? kinda doubt it but always hopeful
They were size 9 1/2s

They brought back the Brooks Launch a few years ago
Tiger! Tiger! Burning Bright!
On! On! Onitsuka!
I'm pretty sure they were Klompenwinkel Clogs (unsanded)

Thats correct. SortieMagicRP4 custom. with midsole similiar to the tartherzeal 6 and the and the sole from SortieMagic SS.
i own a commercial SortieMagicRP4 (blue editon). i can say they are the best running shoe i ever used. but limited to small races.had to remove the original internal sole to a normal asics ortholite from a GT-2000 or kayano if i want to race half marathons.
i have now 200km on it.

Ryan Hall "sold" the hyperspeed to the US market. They're focusing on triathletes now. It sucks, but their best apparel and lightest shoes are only available in Japan.

Heavy Clunkers, in the US there is still one of the lightest asics shoe. the weight is the almost the same as the SortieMagic.
the shoe is tartherzeal 6.
https://www.asics.com/us/en-us/tartherzeal-6/p/0010308383.9090i just ordered a pair from one asics store in europe since i didnt found the shoe on stores. i told me that i have to ordered online. maybe is the same in the US.
According to this, a new Hyperspeed version is on the way.

Asics Japan has to open their distribution channel to the States. It would serve the masses(6' 190-200lbs) who wish to nail a 5k PB. Most importantly it would Fit the masses, Asics Japan have always had a broad high volume toe box making this last construction available and past Japanese small (11.0 feet)
I'm glad Yuki now a professional athlete is working with Asics hopefully Yuki, Asics Japan will not isolate themselves!
