"Conseslus Kipruto put on a show during the final of the men’s 3000-metre steeple chase, employing some cheeky tactics to secure a Kenyan medal sweep.
With 200 metres remaining, first-placed Kipruto searched over his shoulder for teammates Abraham Kibiwott and Amos Kirui as he looked to secure a Kenyan 1-2-3.
With Kibiwott in second, Kirui trailed in fourth behind Canadian Matthew Hughes."
Kipruto slowed down and signalled at Kibiwott to slow down, to give time for Kirui to catch Hughes!

Kipruto looks invincible right now. Will he still be around for Tokyo? Tough to lose a medal like the Canadian did. Ugh.

True, I felt for the guy. But it was great to see it all happen.
Kipruto really used his head there. -
Those hippies are all on dope.

Excellent race, exciting finish for third.
But the premise of your post is rubbish. First and second's finishing time had no affect on the race for third. If anything, it could have had a reverse effect as intended. If the Cannuck had any gas left he possibly could have used their slowing as further motivation to speed up. Unnecessary move by winner.

Yeah I agree. I mean, it was an absolute dominant performance by Kipruto, but I don't see that he had any effect on who got the bronze. It wasn't like Hughes was clipping his heals and wanted to go faster. He looked like he was just out of gas. -
It looks to me that Julius wanted them to go side-by-side through the curve.
One can speculate as to why.
Luring the other guy out into third would indeed make it possible for their teammate to gain a meter or two on him for free.
