So, when all that stuff goes on sale at the end of the season, are you actually losing money? Breaking even? Or do you still make money, once you factor in the amount of money it would take to keep products on shelves or store it until this time next year?
My understanding is that the basic retail markup is roughly 30%, so it seems as if most "Half Off" sales would actually cost you money, and you would have been better off not buying that much product at the beginning of the season (not that you can do anything about that at the time of the Clearance Sale).
The cynic in me wants to think that you made SO much money at full retail that you can afford to nearly give away leftover inventory at the end of the season... I bet that isn't normally the case.
Also interested in how some stores that sell "last season/year" product, ie Ross & TJMaxx, get their inventories.
