Does anyone know of a good javelin coach in the CT or NYC area? I would be looking to hire a coach once my high school season ends, any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

have you asked Lou Vasquez who runs the armory and now Icahn track center?
ridgefield... and i havent yet but that is a possibility if i cannot find anyone more local, thank you.
Rich DeStefano in New Haven lives and breathes javelin throwing. He puts on a couple of clinics/competitions each year (he usually has one in July - here's the link to last year's). I'm sure he'd be glad to work w/ you 1 or 2 days a week over the summer - I think he has a group that works out at Yale.
He works during the day at Yale New Haven pediatric cardiac unit, try him at

Great guy, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Paul Pisano the former UConn star is still competing. He's thrown over 240...
I'd contact him.
I don't know how far away Jersey is from there (very geographically challenged in the east), but Mark Mirabelli knows his stuff with jav.

DeStefano is one good one. Elm City Throwing Camp is another.
Tom Petranoff, former world record holder in the javelin, lives in Rhode Island and has weekly training sessions open to all. He also coaches individuals as well. Contact him at
.
There is also a 2 day clinic for intermediate level and above throwers (Jav/SP/DT, no hammer) coming up at West Point on June 18-19.

My advise is move to California and work with Todd Riech. He's the best Jav coach I know of.
Here's bio from the Long Beach State Web site:
Todd Riech, a 1996 Olympian, begins his fourth year as the javelin coach. In only his first season, Reich had one all-conference thrower, and five athletes score in the Conference Championships. This year, Reich will oversee the strength and conditioning programs for all throwers, as well as jumpers. Recently, Riech finished third at the 2000 Olympic Trials in the javelin. In 2000, Riech was ranked third in the U.S. by Track and Field News. Riech reached the games in Atlanta after winning the 1996 Olympic Trials. Riech was a three-time All-American in the javelin at Fresno State and set a then-NCAA Championship record with a distance of 266’9”. The distance was not only a Bulldog record, but also was one of the top distances in USATF history. Riech twice finished fourth at the NCAA Championships in 1991 and 1992 before his win in 1994. Riech won individual conference titles in 1990, 1992 and 1994. After college, Riech won a Bronze medal at the 1995 Pan Am Games. Riech was originally recruited to go to FSU as a decathlete. Riech is a native of Polson, Montana. Riech resides in Mission Viejo with his wife Lisa.
Mark Mirabelli is also out of New Jersey, I believe. Former thrower himself and has coached many current collegiates....he puts on a clinic every year and still coaches....here is his website.....www.mmtrackandfield.com
