...he would have run down VA Tech and the field and the Ducks would have won. There is no way he would have shut it down and NOT EVEN SCORED for his team. No way. Kerr had the chance at the very least to score for his team and give his DMR teammates an All-American placing. Plenty other athletes doubled back from the Mile or 800 and put forth an honest effort for their team in the DMR. The guy has run a 3:54 mile this year he certainly could have at least held his spot and placed New Mexico in the top 8 and not sacrificed tomorrow's Mile final IMO.
If Ches was in Kerr's position in the DMR tonight

Yea, that wasn't the face of someone shutting it down for safety. He might bluff and say that to avoid giving his mile competitors any confidence, but Kerr looked like he was hurting with some sort of injury. He might have had no choice.

I agree, he was absolutely gassed. -

Everyone on here thinks I LOVE Kerr and hate Ches but I pretty much agree with you. Chesere woudl have won that race. No doubt in my mind. I thought if Kerr had gotten a little closer the light would go off but he clearly wansn't feeling it.
I have little problem with him packing it in and not scoring. I'm sorry. If you aren't in it for the team title and you have someone that good, all people remember is the winner unfortunately.
Franklin is so cautious another coach told me he didn't think Kerr would even anchor to begin with as he doesn't want to jeopardize the mile. -
Yes he was racing against weaker competition at D2 Nats, but today David Ribich got the baton around 6-7s back of the leaders (4:01-4 runners) and went out and split a 3:55 to get the win for his team
jus sayin -
No matter how you look at it, to win from New Mexico's position their anchor would need to run a 3:55 (or 4:00 to place 8th and score). In Kerr's case I think it could have been doable if it wasn't for the 4:02 mile he ran earlier in the day. I think Ches was just so much better at handling a volume of racing so I think he could have done it if put in the same position.

Beyond the volume, Cheserek has, more importantly, always been a team-first runner. Even in high school, he was always doubling/tripling events in even the most meaningless meets to score his team points. As a whole, he valued the team so much that it became a fault, and he basically let Oregon run him into the ground (and suffered for it in the end, as he was pretty much toasted his senior year). -
If Kerr was in Kerr's position in the DMR tonight
He had a serious problem tonight.
Did anyone ask the NM coaches about this? -
Notre Dame's squad ran unbelievably well and just watching their post-race interview on Flotrack you can't help but be happy for them. What an effort by the unheralded Irish. Can't imagine that the Lobos squad felt the same way about their respective full team effort. I'm sure Kerr will win the Mile tomorrow but to pack it in halfway through the 1600 meter leg after his three other NM teammates busted their a**** seems very selfish to me. Kerr had 3 hours in between his Mile prelim and his DMR leg and was head and shoulders better than anybody else on the anchor. None of his DMR teammates will have a shot to claim AA status and I think the least he could do is put forth an honest effort during his leg. Just my 2 cents.

Anybody have confirmation on whether or not he's hurt?
I'm actually very confused by his actions, as it makes absolutely no sense for him to have run 4:20 as the anchor if he was healthy.
1) He had to know that regardless of how the race played out, he'd have to run Sub-4 at minimum in order to win.
2) His position wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't terrible either. He got the baton in 6th place. However, 3rd - 6th were a big cluster with less than HALF a second of separation, and Kerr was the best among them. He was also only down 2 seconds on 1st place.
3) Based on Point 2 and final placing, he could've given any sort of decent effort (for him) and placed 3rd - 4th at minimum. This would require a run around 3:57 - 3:58 or so, which is definitely within his capabilities, given that he didn't have to lead.
4) If he didn't want to run 3:57 - 3:58 to get 3rd - 4th place, why bother running at all? Sure, it's not 1st, but it's still points. NM could easily have subbed in someone who'd be willing to go all out. -

Wejo spoke exclusively to Kerr after the race.
