My almost 9 year old son wants to break his schools 1 mile run record, currently 6:15. His fastest time last fall was 7:24 without any training other than general sports and playing.
I've found a few training programs online but I believe the intensity will be too much for him given his age. I'm pleased and excited that he has set this goal and wants to train and work for it, I don't want to discourage him by taking the fun out of training. He knows he has to work hard if he want to have a chance, I just need to find the right balance of training time/days and make the most of the time we have. There is snow on the ground so we will be using an in indoor track at the local community center so we cannot just step outside to train.
Not being a runner myself, are there any suggestions or programs that you can point to for a training program for a boy of his age? We have roughly 7 weeks until the run.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
