Average person: 80 meters
Average runner: 200 meters
That’s 75 lap pace, I’d say almost a lap for the avg person (not over weight etc)

No way it's 120 miles. I'd say closer to 5-6 miles.
The average person would be 0 distance. If you grabbed 100 people and told them to run as fast as they can, more than 1/2 would not hit 12 mph.
Probably about 150m
my current 400m PR is 1:12 and I've gotten 3rd place in my AG before in a 5K [low 20:nn]
I literally barely squeeze inside this requirement [1:14 400m is 5:00 pace]
The average person can't even run that fast.

I know the avg letsrunner has low expectations of the average person but 5 minute pace Is 18.75 sec per 100m and I’d like to think that even the most average person could get an 18 sec 100m or at least hold that pace for 50 meters.

You would be wrong. Average people are really slow.

How fast do you reckon is average for 100m? A mile? Just out of curiosity.

This is the correct answer

Guys, this snarky response only works for pace, not for speed. If one time is infinite, the average of all the times must be infinite.
On the other hand, even if most people can't run 5:00-pace at all, that doesn't cause the average to be 0. Think of it like this: if only one third of people can hit 5:00 pace for any distance at all, take the average of those distances and divide by three to get the overall average.
So I would expect the average to be somewhere around 600m. I think the vast majority of people can't do that, but there are likely a lot of people in the 300-600m range, and the one dude who can do 1.5 miles at that pace cancels out 4 nonrunners who can't do anything at all. And professional male runners would get around 50 times the standard.
Your confusing average pace of all people versus the pace of the average person.
The your of course is used in a letsrun your welcome sort of way.

20 seconds and 12 minutes.
You are correct. He asked about the average person. I am a big fan of all runners. I try not to be insulting and I don't read any of the inappropriate threads. My response that the distance is 0 for the average runner is just my analysis. I said that less than 1/2 of the population can do it but in reality, it is probably less than 1/4 of the population who can run that fast.
A lot of people are saying the average person couldn't get up to 12 mph. I don't believe that to be true at all. The average person (I'm assuming 'person' means American) isn't morbidly obese, just somewhat overweight- and I've had overweight people beat me in a dead sprint. In fact, I'd dare to say a lot of average people can outsprint your run-of-the-mill distance runner, due to distance runner's lack of fast twitch and muscle mass. If the average person were explained that pacing is essential, then I'd think most would land in the 200m-400m range, because after that, they wouldn't be able to sustain an average of 12 mph, because it's a sprint for them. The difference between the average person and a distance runner is that 12 mph isn't a sprint for us. We've specialized our bodies through training to be able to hold such a pace very efficiently, and that's where we hold the advantage- and this is something commonly misunderstood- we aren't faster, we're just able to go for longer.
Sorry, but no. The average person on the street probably hasn't done a single step of any type of running in years if not decades. They are not going to be doing anything quickly.
Count how many people you see running today who are not actually out for a run. Even the kids who are late for school just flop along for 50 yards before walking.
700m, but only because I'm willing to feel bad.
