what gives? Nice, private, pac-12 school. Why the complete lack of distance runners???

Because they don't want a distance team. You can figure out the rest.
This is why xc and track need to be separate sports. Carol doesn't care about distance so a place that should have a rocking distance squad does nothing. Oh, but let's add another hurdler though. What a waste.
No men's xc team so if you are a distance runner you would only be going for track.
Thus, with no XC, most distance runners are not going to choose to go to that schoool. Also, not a nice area to have to run your miles in.

Ah yes, South Central LA is a great place for skinny white guys to go running.
definitely not the school I would choose to go to for distance running. literally in south LA and wouldn't want to do any long runs around there. would have to drive somewhere every time.
Outside the confines of USC’s campus... the surrounding neighborhood is not very hospitable... downright dangerous to be matter of fact. Running in that neighborhood is moving target practice.

That actually makes it a great place to train.
We lived in far south LA and trained in the Palos Verdes hills for the distance runs and around parks for short morning jogs. We ran at the track for intervals and around Exposition Park (the Coliseum) for easy days... but not too may of those.
Being an undergrad and living on campus doesn't work too well there. IMHO.

They have no men's cross country at USC. But the Trojan women used to be very competitive in the 800 and 1500 at the NCAA Championships. And they also had a few excellent distance runners. Bottom line is that USC just doesn't care anymore about the distance program.

Sure. But they share the same scholarship pool. I'm assuming that's what this poster meant. As a college coach, the moment we hear any distance athlete is seriously considering USC in their top 2 - 3, we immediately assume that kid isn't interested in working hard & running fast & generally stop recruiting them. I understand the strategic decision Carol is making though...and it sure isn't hurting them in the sport track & field.
Same reason LSU, Florida State, Clemson, GT, all have poor distance programs...they are a SPRINT SCHOOL!!!!
