A little slice of life movie.
Great acting, direction, cinematography and sound track.
Excellent choice. I remember that you mentioned it a while back on another thread. It's a beautiful understated film with beautiful understated performances. Duvall may be best remembered for "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" in "Apocalypse Now," but his performance in "Tender Mercies" is what I remember best of all.
My favorite is Paul Thomas Anderson's third feature film, "Magnolia" (1999). PTA has a lot of fans these days, and they tend to have very different views about the relative merits of his films. I prefer his earlier, rather Altmanesque films -- "Hard Eight," "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," and "Punch-Drunk Love."
Speaking of Robert Altman, two of my all-time favorites are "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" (1971) and "The Long Goodbye" (1973).
