I was at the work gym today after work and it was pretty busy. I wanted to bench press but I noticed that the bench area had no bench, so I saw that no one was using the bench by the smith machine and went to drag it a few feet across the gym, when a man approached me and said, "Excuse me, I'm using that." This was a solid 20 seconds into me dragging this bench. I looked at him and said, "No, you weren't on it," and he was clearly annoyed. What's going on here? This happens at the gym occasionally where someone will claim to be on a machine. IMO, you're not on the machine unless you're physically on it or hovering nearby. If I see someone next to the equipment, I'll always check in and make sure they aren't about to do a set, but today the only indicator that this area was being used were the weights stacked on the machine; HOWEVER, it is really common at the work gym for people to not re-rack weights. I always find myself having to re-rack others weights before doing a set and it's quite a pain in the ass because I'm a woman trying to build up my strength (my bench is about 90lbs right now haha) and find myself having to lug several 45 lb weights back to their home. Anyway, just wondering what everyone's thoughts are. Was I in the wrong here/should I have checked first? Shouldn't it be enough if no one is on the machine or anywhere nearby?
