I still think Murphy could have medalled at Worlds but he got drawn in a heat with another guy who could medal at Worlds.
Only heat winner automatically advanced and all 3 time qualifiers came from heat 3.
The heat was tactical. Here was our semi-live play by play>
26.73 at 200. Windle led.
55.76 at 400 for Windle (damn. There may not be time qualifiers from this one. Murphy on his shoulder).
600 - 1:23.69 Murphy still there.

Wow 1:49.21 Windle over Murphy! Murphy pulled up on his shoulder but never gave up the lead. Windle wire to wire.
Murphy ran some extra distance ran on Windle's shoulder for much of the race but it was a great run by Windle.
Here is a gif of the finish.

You are an idiot to think he could have medaled at worlds. Dudes in 1:48 shape at best this winter...
-
This is why before the race I asked people what they thought about only the winner advancing. I don't like it - hate it outdoors. I think I'd rather see top 2 move on automatically from each heat go on.
BY going by time qualifiers - you are assuming people are running for time. They often aren't - like no one runs for time in a 1500 at altitude.
Now I'm sure many will criticize his tactics. "Why didn't he just make sure he runs a 1:48 which he can do in his sleep (1:48.66 got in on time)?"
Well for starters being in the first heat he had no idea what the time qualifiers would be. But the second point is this. Does it really matter? And what I mean by that is - If he can't be Windle, is he going to make the team anyway? Maybe that's what the NOP was thinking in clearly telling him just to run to win.
The NOP dreams big.
And their stars also often blow off the media. Following in the footsteps of past NOP stars in the past like Rupp and Cain, Murphy didn't stop in the mixed zone after his disappointing race. -
Oh cool I guess I won’t watch the nbc sports broadcast. Thanks!

Except that he ran 1:46 already this winter...doh! You're a real student of the sport, I can tell. -

1) Huge talent
2) He just ran .04 behind Windle despite running much further in distance. Windle's run 1:45 this year.
3) Big improvement in his last race.
4) Erik Sowinski got a bronze last world indoors and never ran under 1:47 that year indoors. -

At best when he’s already ran 1:46 lol tf -

As another pointed out he’s already run much faster than 1:48 this winter. So it’s clear you are the idiot. -
Think a little harder about what you want. If you have top 2 auto qualify then you have zero time qualifiers. Is that really the better solution?
Another option is have an additional heat. Which is probably worse.
It’s only indoors... an indoor world medal is about the same as a high school state championship. -
I'm talking about a clean performance. I have heard that he was on a PED when he ran 1:46

This is exactly why ALL qualifying should be solely by time, and not placings.
When people run slow, they do NOT deserve to advance, contrary to the current method which is terrible. -

wouldn’t be surprised -
How about "Spoiler" next time ya doofus.

That wasn’t even 3 weeks ago, you heard nothing
-
You can't win the race if you don't qualify.

Um, ever hear of Murphy's Law?

Not unreasonable. But still a mistake, either by Murphy or his coach, because of Windle's specific abilities.
The final will be a different kind of race. Brazier will take the pace and take everyone to their redlines.
If Windle is taken to his redline, he can be beaten at the finish. But if Windle is not at his redline, you can't be behind him going into the final straight of an indoor track. He is too good at gassing it.
Murphy didn't want to admit that he had to be the one to take the pace. And he paid the price.
As I mentioned in the preview thread, it was Elllison's PB last week that pushed Murphy into Windle's heat. If not for that, Murphy is almost certainly in the final. -

If I had 45 second , 400 speed and sub-4 strength, I, too, would almost certainly be in the final!
