Bummer. I ran on that course back in college. It was a tough course.
Golf "holes" and parking: the American dream! For fat f*ck sickly Indianans, sweet. Hard to imagine there are so many "sick" people even in Bloomington, the one minor oasis that azz cancer state.
I am all for saving the course, it is a great place to train. However, it is a tad late to try saving it. They have already started breaking ground! This has been in planning and open for public debate for over a year (that I know of for sure, I'm sure much longer). Large investments like this take huge amounts of planning to get to the ground breaking stage. I am sure Coach Helmer was able to give his input.
Again, I support saving the course, I just think its crazy that you are so late to the game.
I support this petition very strongly. I literally think we should all join to push that it's saved. I don't want to see it go. I know I sound like an obsession which can't let go of the past, but I want it to be saved, so we can literally remember it as it is. I was I'd know more early about the alleged plans. I literally think a good idea would be organise a race on it and invite Bekele. It will revile it's formal self and get back to glory. Nobody would get rid of it so easy known that Bekele supported it. I say get big names to sing the petition. You can put Banana Bread on it, but if we have big names like Bekele, Dire Tune, Rojo etc supporting the cause, that will make a big influence since there powerful people.

Great argument. Nailed it.
Banana Bread, your the biggest brain person I know. What a good idea. I would literally petition anything you agree with.
Has ground broken for the parking area or just the hospital building? Parking lots are way cheaper, so no wonder they favored that method.
This saddens me and I wish that I would have known about it earlier. The IU course has hosted the NCAA championships and the high school championships for many years before they moved it to Terre Haute (presumably because the state XC championships interfered with football Saturday). It’s a great cross country that is challenging, spectator friendly, and provides an accessible place for local runners, both competitive and recreational, to go for a nice run on soft ground.
To the developers, I am sure it is just another underutilized open space that is not maximizing value. F that mindset. Seriously. Only when we pave over everything do we realize what we have lost. Well planned and accessible open space makes a community a better place to live. Not sure if the IU Nature Preserve trails are still closed as well. They closed off the trails for deer research and people just kept tearing down the fences.

It would have been even better if he had been more clear about what he literally thinks, as opposed what he figuratively thinks. Still, great points.
Here is a recent article about the fate of the course:
https://indianapublicmedia.org/news/residents-concerned-iu-hospital-impact-running-140419/
It's literally ironic that it's a health centre that's getting rid of the XC course. Running and the park is important place for health, so by getting rid of that people will be less healthier. I guess it's more business for them then.

It's literally like rain on your wedding day.
Irony: preventive health measure (walking/running area) replaced by hospital (pills and surgery). What happens when there are vast federal subsidies for "medicine" vs "activity"
The problem is that, during the initial planning phase when there was opportunity for public comment, IU Health said that the cross country course would not be impacted by the new hospital. It is only in the last several weeks that it has become clearer that their intention is to replace the cross course with a golf hold and a surface parking lot. And no, it is not too late. They have broken ground on the building, but not on the xc course. If they would switch from a surface lot to a parking garage, and if they could find a different place for the golf hole, the course would be saved. Please consider signing the petition if you care about the course and about preventative health like exercise and time spent outdoors.
*golf hole

And Indiana charges to get in their State Parks (1 of only 5 in the U.S.) yet you can walk your fat at55 into any casino free of charge!!

Facebook group about saving the course is here with more specific information about recent developments and how the plan to convert the course to golf holes and parking lots is more recent. Also, this is all about money. There is more money in the golf course and hospital than the cross country course. Nobody cares about running. So speak up and be loud and annoying.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsofIUXC/We tried to save the cross-country course in 1930 also. But they ended up putting in a library and chemistry lab. All in the name of progress. smh

Christ. My high school's cross country course got demolished to make room for construction (and cross country is the best performing sport at our school too). Not the slightest bit of compensation from school administration. Things like this are flat out disrespectful and shows the lack of appreciation schools/universities have towards our sport.
