It’s my senior year of track and my only goal is to break 5 in the mile. I thought this was possible because I ran 5:04 at the end of xc (i ran 18:05 for 5k xc).
However, I slacked off very hard over the winter running 20-25 miles per week, compared to 40-45 during xc (peaked at 60 over the summer).
I thought I was still in decent shape, but at our first meet I ran a dismal 5:21. This was an indoor meet and it was a full mile, so more like 5:19 for 1600m and if it was outdoor maybe a little faster.
Last year my first race was a 5:21 1600m outdoors. I only got that down to 5:13 by march when I ran my last 1600 of the season.
Given all of this, do I have a shot at breaking 5? Because if I don’t I might quit track and just start lifting weights and get a job, which i’m going to do after track season regardless.
