Another profile/tribute on Runyan who used to be 340-pounds and on the cusp of diabetes, but changed his diet and became a runner to turn his health around. He was training for the 2018 Chicago Marathon:

Running doesn't confer immunity to CVD. We've known this since Jim Fixx died in 1984. This is really sad, but I'm glad he got some good years at the end, gave it a good fight.
Thanks for posting this story. A close friend of my family was one of Dan's co-workers; I also attended this school as a kid. Why does something need to be accomplished other than sharing a story about a good man who passed too soon? If you really need to take something away from it, use it as a reminder that you never know your time and to make the most of it. Inspire those around you and leave a legacy. I also think most men 30+ probably have this story as a fear in the back of their minds.

My condolences go out to this man and his family. However, to get to 340 lbs is a pretty severe take on life and daily habits which sadly took several years if not decades off his life. I can't imagine the compromised state a body is in to support 340, and to loose it all over 40, one could argue that his body didn't have the strength (yet) to be putting in marathon mileage. It makes for a nice story, but training for a marathon is no joke. I hope his family finds peace in this knowing he gave it one hell of an effort to turn it around, and his kids can take those healthy practices he found later in life. Rest easy brother.
