Take into consideration:
1. Material
2. Cut
3. Liner
4. Pocket(s)
5. Overall fit/ comfort
I've found that some companies are very good at one or two of the criteria, but have yet to find a short that checks all the boxes.

The nike tempo 2" split running shorts are the best running shorts of all time. I haven't tried the new design that they released like a year or two ago, but dang, great shorts.
1. Material - simple dri fit, can't go wrong. Available in lots of colors, both simple and lowkey or bright and flashy, whatever you pick. My personal favorite was black with neon inseam, best of both worlds. 10/10
2. Cut - 2" split shorts, looks good. Not too long (what are you, a high schooler wearing baskerball shorts?), not too short (I'm looking at you BOA...) 10/10
3. Liner - Okay, I'll have to rate them an 8/10 here. Of my 6 pairs, 2 eventually had the liner wear out so my junk fell out, couldn't wear them any more. Took them 3+ years each though, so I can't be too upset.
4. Pocket - room enough for a key and/or credit card in a spot where it doesnt bounce around. No annoying zippers. No sideways zipper pocket where something can just fall out if you forget to zip it. Just a pocket inside the waist that opens upward so nothing ever bounces out. 10/10
5. Overall fit/comfort - Perfect fit, perfect comfort. What else can I say? 10/10
6. Price - you could get them for like a hair over $20 if they were on sale online, which is pretty good. 10/10
58/60 - 97%
I've never been a huge fan of Nike, but perhaps I need to put that aside. I heard good things about the Saxx Kinetic short, but they are a 5". I ordered a pair and will let you all know . I tend to run mostly in the Patagonia Strider Pro. I believe they are technically trail shorts, but what's the real difference.
