His girlfriend lives near New York so this makes sense.
Who is his gf?
Seems pretty obvious he doesn’t want to play second fiddle to Murphy and Engels and is making the change now in an off year so he has an established routine that works and is in place by 2019 so everything’s comfortable for 2020.
Murphy and Engles are going to be his biggest rivals in the US leading into 2020 so why would he want to stay and train full time with them. The beauty of the NOP in the past was they all competed in different events / for different countries, now they’ve brought in all the young studs from the same event and Centro probably doesn’t want to go into races where his biggest US rivals know his fitness, weaknesses from training together every day.
I guess he’ll still do altitude camps with them, but equally wouldn’t surprise me if he goes to flagstaff and is training with other guys rather than the other locations NOP tend to go to.
Still hoping Jenkins crushes it the next 2-3 years, really rate Pete Julian as a coach and hope he starts to get more credit for what he’s doing with some of the middle distance guys whilst Alberto starts to step back from being the main coach.
Not trying to be a hater but.... Centro hasn't done anything since Olympic Gold. Olympic Gold is the ultimate achievement in athletics so it only makes sense that he just isn't hungry anymore.
If he wants to get out of Webb's shadow he's going to have to break the AR mile record, sub 13 5k, and AR 1500 to erase any doubt in the minds of track geeks. 800m doesn't seem to be in the cards, not enough speed.
Hopefully Centro SR and JR and AlSal read this post and get that fire... Centro can retire today and still be discussed as one of the all time US greats.... If Centro wants to separate himself from the pack of Webb, Lagat, Scott, Ryun he's still got some times to post.

Lol, Webb was great, but Webb vs. Centrowitz is not an argument. Centro has a faster 1500 pb and his WORST result in a global championship final is the same as Webb's best (8th).
I'll grant you that Webb was more versatile than Centro -- I don't think Centro is ever running 27:34 for 10k -- but Centro has clearly had the better career. Three global outdoor medals, Olympic champ, World Indoor champ. Webb accomplished none of those.
In 2014 Ritz wanted out of NOP. He realized that they were dealing in unethical practices and wanted out. In order to hang on to his Nike contract he could only leave under 2 major conditions. He needed to keep his mouth shut about the fuzzy gray area stuff and he needed to say that Alberto was still his coach. He agreed.
We now know that Alberto never coached Ritz for one day after he left.
Same thing for Centro in 2018.
This video also proves that Centro definitely reads this message board.
'Sup Centro! Keep it real!
When the shite hits the fan you don't want to be standing next to the fan.

Ever heard of Robby Andrews? He's only 26. Why won't he be one of the favorites in 2020?
As a longtime Centro fan, I have mixed feelings about this. It always makes me nervous to see professional athletes leave one coach for another when their first was, by all outward accounts, working out just fine. Perhaps it's Jenny Simpson's failed bid to go out on her own, after her WC Gold, that is casting a show here. Centro is different, of course. He's always been overseen in some capacity by his dad, and Alberto is at least nominally still in the picture. But I worry that an absence of high caliber training partners will have adverse effects on his training. Say what you will about Galen, Mo, Ritz, and company--there's no way that training with them didn't have a positive effect on Centro's training. And there's no way that Engels and Murphy wouldn't have a positive effect, either.
I understand why people are suspecting something is afoot with NOP, and maybe more news will indeed come to light, but my sense is that something much tamer is happening. Alberto is getting ready to retire. He's keeping at it with the marathon types and overseeing workouts on the Nike campus, but it's Julian's stable now. So perhaps Centro is just preparing accordingly, too.

Barringer won WCs under Henner. Then regressed. Then went back to Wetmore.
Centro doesn’t need to do anything after Olympic gold at 1500m. Anything else he achieves is icying on a career where he reached the very top of his event. Olympic 1500m champion. Quite an extraordinarily achievement. Look at the list of names he’s joined as Olympic 1500m champ.

that's a fairly bold prediction, and I'm not saying you're wrong, I think there's a good chance you're right, but it would not surprise me if his biggest US rival in 2020 has not yet run NCAA. if you look back through the history it just seems to happen, every olympic cycle, some new young stud just emerges out of the woods to completely revise expectations. I think this is probably more apparent in the 800m than the 1500m but I think you'll find it has happened a lot and will happen again. and there's still two years to go.
Cheers.

No one cares about records anymore
Matt Centrowitz (Senior) retired from his coaching job at American to be more involved with his sons training, so that implied someone was likely to move. This doesn't seem like big news.
I’m cheering for Centro but Portland is a boring ****hole with no distractions and perfect for training. The east coast is a coaches nightmare especially living a train ride to NYC. Matt is hilarious if you follow his Instagram. He will be running on the treadmill at 11:30 PM (remember this is his job) and playing mortal combat is his joy. It will be interesting.
I went on a run with jordan hasay and i talked to her for half an hour 1 on 1. She told me that no matter where she is in the world, she still talks to alberto every day. She said alberto doesnt need to actually watch her do workouts to know what shes doing. Even if shes not in portland, alberto is still her coach. So, while centro is probably leaving, its a possibility that hes not
