Did Lindgren run 4:01 in HS more or less as a purely aerobic beast?
Was Gerry doing 40 x 400 (440?) like Ryun but just not naturally as gifted in the speed department?
I'm sure it's tough to separate the BS myths from the actual "stranger than fiction" aspects of his training but I was wondering if anyone knew what he could throw down for 200/400 in training and maybe his all-out 800 potential?
Ryun could run well under 50 seconds for 440y; Lindgren, not a prayer.
With 4:01 and a 13:33 I would think he'd be decently enough gifted in the speed department. Nothing sub 50, but I would think around or sub 51. Maybe 51.5 on the slower estimate.
Despite being a heelstriker Lindgren had low 50 speed. He would have likely been faster if he trained for speed and did less garbage miles.
He trained by running high mileage +200 mpw. Also junk mileage is not junk it serves a very important role in training. Jack Daniels in one if his seminars tells a story on if he woke up in the middle of the night to go per he would run 10 miles. In fact, he went crazy latter on after college where he left his wife and kids. All he left was a note on the table basically saying bye. And. then proceeded to move to Hawaii to train. One of my idols.

See, this is the bullsht that totally diminishes his credibility. How does someone run a 4:01 mile then claim they can't run an open 60? It's ludicrous.

And you buy that? Whatever you can do in a final lap you can at least do in an open race after a warm-up.

Everyone should have respect for Gerry as a runner and some sympathy for him as a human being, but yes, you should take pretty much everything he says with a lot of salt. He has made many eccentric claims on these boards over the years.
To answer the question, with a 4:01 mile it is likely he *could* (doesn't mean he ever did) run at least 53.x in the 440yd but likely not faster than 52.x since 52.x is considered the slowest 400m speed necessary to run sub 4:00 in the mile. Given Lindgren was much more a long distance guy than a 1500m man, it is likely his 400m speed was on the slower side for 4;01 milers.
Anyone know his splits in his 4:01?

I guess he never did hard intervals. Very odd.
Definitely Pre as a freshman... Lindgren was a senior and went ballistic that last 300m to win the race. Amazing.

Are you still unsure if he was on sub 2 hour pace at 26 miles in a Marathon? He said so after all and a bunch of guys on the internet dispute that.
What I'm sure of is that you just want to argue for no reason. I wasn't at the marathon he refers to. I do recall reading a report of the race that said he was on world record pace for a while. If you can find an actual quote from Lindgren that he was at sub two hour pace at the 26 mile mark of that marathon I will apologize profusely. He may have said that he ran sub two hour pace for a while but for 26 miles? Find me that quote and I'll have some respect for that bunch of guys on the internet.
He had enough speed to outkick Prefontaine in XC.

In HS I ran a 1:58.x half 5 different times. The first was at the end of a cc race. The other 4 were in either relays or open 800's. My best 400 was 60. I was able to run 200's in :27.x in practice but I could never get under 60 for 400. I'm guessing I was somewhat like Gerry(not nearly as good)
How much interest do you think Gerry had in a 440? I don't know what his best open 400 was but I suspect he never broke 60. Could he break 60, of course. He'd of probably run a 440 much faster if he had a running start too. If he really ran 200+ miles a week he may not of trained for speed at all. It would make sense that he could run his fastest sprints at the end of a race if so.
